BLACKSBURG – The Hokies win their first meet of the season on Saturday against George Washington and Ohio.
Both the men and women brought strong performances to the meet today, earning them their first win of the season. The men's team beat the Colonials 202.5-86.5. The women's team swept the Colonials 204-96 and also won against the Bobcats 196-104.
Tech Women
Caroline Bentz dominated backstroke during the meet. Bentz started her day as the first leg of the 200 medley relay with Fanni Gyurinovics, Karisa Franz and Madelyn Moore that placed first with a time of 1:41.68, with a 50 backstroke split of 25.75. Bentz then won again in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a time of 54.69. Then earning her second individual win, Bentz finished first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:59.27. Bentz finished her meet with the 200 IM and a time of 2:04.4.
Chase Travis owned the distance races throughout the meet. Starting her day with the 1000 freestyle, Travis finished first with a time of 10:16.69 almost five seconds ahead of second. She then went on to win the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:59.74.
In her Hokies debut, Carmen Weiler Sastre showed she is a powerful force in the pool. She began the meet as the first leg of 200 medley relay with Brooke Zettel, Isabel Marstellar and Emily Claesson that placed third with a time of 1:45.52, swimming a 50 backstroke split of 25.46. Sastre then went to win the 200 Freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:49.63. Not done yet, she she won the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.29 followed quickly by Gyurinovics with a time of 50.32. Sastre finished her meet as a part of the winning 400 freestyle relay with Gyurinovics, Moore and Claesson with a time of 3.21.46.
On the boards, Izzi Mroz gave a strong performance. In the 1-meter competition, Mroz finished first with 291.70, almost 20 points ahead of second. Then in the 3-meter competition, she finished first with 317.10.
Tech Men
Luis Dominguez Calonge proved he had endurance during todays meet. Calonge started his day by winning the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:26.96. He then went on to win the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.88. In the 500 freestyle, Calonge earned second with a time of 4:33.37 seven-hundreths behind Lee Naber.
Joseph Hong brought his speed to the pool today. He started his day as the the 3rd leg of the 200 medley relay with Nico Garcia Saiz, Landon Gentry and Ben Eckerson finishing fifth with a time of 1:31.03. Hong then went to win the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.49, followed shortly by finishing third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:05.41.
William Hayon showed he is a great asset to have in the pool during his Hokie debut. He started his meet as the anchor for the winning 200 medley relay with Forest Webb, AJ Pouch and Mario Molla Yanes finishing with a time of 1:29.49. Hayon then earned second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.79 behind fellow Hokie, Youssef Ramadan. He then participated in the 100 freestyle where he finished third with a time of 46.19, and the 100 butterfly where he finished fourth with a time of 50.64.
Noah Zawadzki dominated the boards for the men in both the 1-meter and 3-meter. He finished the 1-meter with a 401.15, and the 3-meter with a 390.65.
