SUNDAY, JUNE 12 -- 5:10 P.M. ET

Virginia Tech head coach John Szefc and select players met with the media for a press conference following Game 3 of the Blacksburg Super Regional (full transcript). For what they had to say:

Head coach John Szefc

Opening statement:
"Well, first off, I just want to congratulate Oklahoma. They're a very good team, very well coached by Coach Johnson and their staff. I'll give them a lot of credit and they're just very good. This is the only home series we lost the whole year, so I give them credit. I want to thank our administration for running a first-class event here, from a regional last week to a Super Regional this week. I know our players and our coaches and everybody in our team greatly appreciate what they did to put this event on and keep us at home in a first -lass manner. Lastly, I would just really thank our players. I don't even really know what to say about this group of guys. I've been around some pretty good teams over the years and every team is somewhat special in their own way. This one, I got a real problem with this season ending. Eventually it ends, I get that, but this group of guys is a very special group of guys. Not necessarily just how they play the game, but who they are. They've really changed me a little bit as a coach, as far as how I go about things and how I handle young players. So, in that respect, I really have to thank them and I will thank them in about a half hour here. It's been a very good year for our team; we won the ACC championship, we won a regional here, we went to the final of the Super Regional. We're playing a home game on June 12. I've never done that before in 30-something years, so it's been a very good year for our players. I know it stinks right now, but eventually they will look back on this very, very fondly."

On the bullpen running out of gas:
"That's a good point you bring up there. I don't think we really had to lean on any one pitcher in that pen. I think throughout the year we didn't use the pen all that much throughout the whole year so we could go to the tank when we needed to. We had to go to the pen pretty early. It's tough because you're facing a really good team. I think our guys were pretty effective in how they pitched the last couple of days, but it just didn't happen today. I don't know whether it was guys being tired or not. That didn't help obviously, but it wasn't like we had a whole lot of traffic on the basis. Give their guys credit, their pitchers are very good. They pitch and play defense. Every ball we hit seemed like it was in a shift or Pettis made that diving catch. Gavin hits one on two strikes and it dies right at the wall. Their two strikes ones we're leaving the park with the wind going out. It just seemed like everything that could have gone negative for us today did. One negative, It seemed like the opposite for those guys. That's gonna happen from time to time, unfortunately, and it happened to us today."

Utility Nick Biddison

On how he will remember his time in Blacksburg:
"The people sitting up here, and Coach Szefc, what he's done for all of us sitting here and all of the guys in the locker room. What we've done for the program, the school of Virginia Tech, and the baseball program at Virginia Tech I think is pretty special. I think that we can all sit here and say that we all made this place better and we took this place somewhere it hasn't been in a very long time. It sucks that we didn't accomplish our ultimate goal of Omaha, but I think we accomplished a lot of things. We just fell short of our ultimate goal and we're going to look back at the season as a success. Our last game was kind of a failure, but I think everything that we've done is pretty special. And what I'll remember most is just all of the relationships, friendships, and all of the good things. You don't remember the score, just the relationships we've built with each other and everything that this school has given us, it's pretty special."

Shortstop Tanner Schobel

On what he will remember from his time in Blacksburg:
"This is the best team that I've ever been on. This is statistically, I think, the best Virginia Tech team that has ever played. Just like Gavin [Cross] said, the relationships that I've made over the years have been tremendous and unbelievable. I know that I would do anything for these guys sitting next to me and in the locker room, [and] I know they would do the same for me. A lot of people don't get that kind of opportunity."

Catcher Cade Hunter

On coming up one win short of the College World Series:
"I'm going to speak for all of us and say that this sucks pretty bad. We didn't get it done on the offense today, and that's pretty much the moral of the story. Not too much to be happy about, but we can still celebrate the season and what we did together."

SUNDAY, JUNE 12 -- 4:21 P.M. ET

Virginia Tech's historic season came to a close on Sunday, falling 11-2 to Oklahoma in Game 3 of the Blacksburg Super Regional at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.

Tech's two runs came off of the bat of Carson DeMartini, who hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning.

SUNDAY, JUNE 12 -- 1:49 P.M. ET

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, third baseman Carson DeMartini hit a no-doubter to right to tie the game up at 2-all, scoring Eduardo Malinowski.

SATURDAY, JUNE 11 -- 4:37 P.M. ET

Virginia Tech head coach John Szefc and select players met with the media for a press conference following Game 2 of the Blacksburg Super Regional (full transcript). For what they had to say:

Head coach John Szefc

Opening statement:
"I think obviously—probably a really fun game to watch for a lot of people. [The game had] a lot of offense, a lot of different pitching changes. I think it was like an exercise in toughness for our guys. They showed you how tough they are [and] how good they are, again. They've been showing that for a long time. A lot of different contribution [from] DeMartini, Hunter and Biddison. Hurney was tremendous, among others. Higgins was good, too. We've got a lot of guys that contribute, but again, you don't get to this stage with one or two guys. Just happy for our guys that we get to host a game three at our place. [I'm] happy for the fans [and] I really look forward to tomorrow."

On what his message is to the team:
"I just keep saying the same thing.  Advice-wise, if you get caught up in the emotion that Carson's talking about, you're done.  We've got a lot of stale toast in our dugout.  Stale, dry toast. The drier the toast, the better the performance.  If you're going to go up and down on a roller coaster or a ferris wheel, it's not going to be good."

Pitcher Jonah Hurney

On how he felt about his pitching today:
"I think I did a pretty good job. Just trying to do the job, execute pitches, and trust my team behind me."

Infielder Carson DeMartini

On what the mindset of the team was going into a must-win game:
"Nothing really different than the way we came into the game yesterday. Coach Szefc always talks about not making it more than it is. It's still a baseball game, those guys are as scared to play us as we are to play them. Nothing really changed between yesterday and today, it just fell our way today and we're going to go out tomorrow with the same mindset."

SATURDAY, JUNE 11 -- 3:56 P.M. ET

Winning Game 2 comfortably, Virginia Tech outpaced Oklahoma Saturday 14-8 to set up a Game 3 on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park in the Blacksburg Super Regional.

FRIDAY, JUNE 10 -- 7 P.M. ET

Virginia Tech head coach John Szefc and select players met with the media for a press conference following Game 1 of the Blacksburg Super Regional (full transcript). For what they had to say:

Head coach John Szefc

Opening statement:
"That was a tough one, obviously not the outcome we're looking for but give Oklahoma credit. Bennett was really tough and Michael was just as good for them at the end. We faced two pretty good arms today. We had a lot of threats and got pretty close. We just weren't able to come back and tie it. We got plenty of good players and arms to come back and even it up tomorrow and win it on Sunday. Right now it hurts a little bit, but when you get to this stage of the game, you're gonna play really good people. I think we're good and I think they're really good. If you enjoy watching college baseball, that was a really good college baseball game to watch. From a fan perspective. So I'll leave it at that."

On Weycker's performance:
"It was really important for him to go that long. He was very good just looking at his line. He came in and stabilized things to give our offense a chance to come back. He's done it before. In a lot of cases we have come back but we just ran into two really good arms today. We just couldn't get that big knock that we needed. Both the two home runs were big and we had some good at bats but we'll regroup and even it up tomorrow."

Outfielder Jack Hurley

On what takeaways the team has after losing the first game of a series earlier this season:
"Just to have a short memory and realize that they have to come out and beat us again tomorrow. Just not letting that happen. We're a tough group, mentally we get over things pretty quickly so I think a lot of us have already turned the page and are looking forward to tomorrow."

Pitcher Henry Weycker

On team mindset after losing for the first time in the NCAA postseason:
"I mean, we've been here before. We were here against Pitt and Louisville and ended up
winning those series. Everybody's calm, we're all in a good place right now and I think we just
need to move forward and look to the next game."

FRIDAY, JUNE 10 -- 6 P.M. ET

Virginia Tech's comeback fell just short against Oklahoma on Friday, as the Hokies had a 5-4 setback despite two home runs and quality bullpen pitching in the first game of the Blacksburg Super Regional at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.

Tech will be back at it tomorrow at noon ET on ESPNU for Game 2.

For the full recap.

FRIDAY, JUNE 10 -- 5:10 P.M. ET

In the bottom of the sixth, Virginia Tech's Carson Jones drilled a two-run home run the opposite way to left center to get the Hokies on the scoreboard. It marked his eighth home run of the season.

Tech still trails Oklahoma 5-2.

THURSDAY, JUNE 9 -- 6 P.M. ET

Heading into the Blacksburg Super Regional, the Virginia Tech baseball team had its head coach John Szefc and select players meet with the media for a press conference on Thursday (full transcript).

For what they had to say:

Head coach John Szefc

Opening statement:
"[I'm] Just happy to be still playing here in June. [I] feel really fortunate to be playing at home. When we don't have to travel, I feel like our guys get a better chance to rest and recover. This late in the season, the weather is good. [We're] playing a good team. We're a good team. IT should be a lot of fun to watch."

On scouting Oklahoma:
"They run well [and] they're pretty aggressive on the bases. Their pitching is probably similar to ours—similar. They've got one left-hand starter, but most people do. They're good—they're a pretty hot team. They just beat Florida [and] they beat Texas in the Big 12 Championship. Then again, most teams you're playing this time of year are going pretty good, and they're going pretty good and we're going pretty good. As far as individual stuff that would concern us, outside of the fact that they've got a lot of guys that can run, I can't really say there's anything that we really haven't seen throughout the whole year in the ACC."

Utility Nick Biddison

On what playing a tough ACC slate does for a team in the postseason:
"I think it just prepares us for whatever Oklahoma has. We don't really know what they have, they're in a different conference and we don't know how good that conference is. At this stage of the game, Coach Szefc says it all the time, there's nothing we haven't seen yet, there's not going to be any surprises this weekend. It's the same game we've been playing for the last however many weeks. So what we've taken from the ACC schedule is just that we're good enough to play with the best and this is just another weekend to do that."

Outfielder Gavin Cross

On preserving the moment and not looking too far ahead:
"It's just one pitch at a time, one game at a time. Like Nick said, we'll go out tomorrow night prepared and play to win and then when tomorrow's over we'll look to Saturday and however many games we play this weekend. Hopefully at the end of the weekend we're going to Omaha, but we have to take it one pitch, one play at a time and not look at it for anything bigger than what it is."

Catcher Cade Hunter

On how to balance the threat of stolen bases from Oklahoma:
"I don't think we necessarily change anything. Obviously, we just want to make sure we're switching up our looks and our timing to the plate but with a team like them with speed, you just can't let that affect making pitches and getting guys out. So, it's not necessarily that things are going to change, just maybe keep a closer eye on the guy on first."

SUNDAY, JUNE 5 -- 11:45 P.M. ET

Following Game 6 of the Blacksburg Regional, Virginia Tech head coach John Szefc and select players met with the media Sunday night for a press conference (full transcript). Read some of what the Hokies had to say below:

Head coach John Szefc

(Opening statement) "It's really special to win an NCAA regional. It's my third one. It's my first one at home, however, but I'm just so happy for our players and our coaching staff. There's so much that goes into this. These guys have been tremendous. It's just a great group to hang out with. Putting the baseball aside, I'm just really happy that they can enjoy this in Blacksburg together. I'm happy for Virginia Tech and for Blacksburg in general. I really appreciate our fans being here and giving us so much support. I really felt like they helped us through that game. It was a tight game. I tip my cap to Colombia and Brett Boretti. He does a great job with his program and they gave us their best available arms. They were really good. Those guys deserve a lot of credit. They came back on probably six hours of sleep and won the first game going away. They gave us everything that they had in the second game. That's a very well represented baseball program right there. I just want to give credit to our players and coaching staff. I'm so happy for everyone involved with the program from weight training, to our administration, Seth Diters, Kyle Staggers, Mike Swanhart and everybody that puts it together for our guys. I'm really happy particularly for Ryan Metz. Metz has been here for five years and got to start an NCAA regional championship game. Just think about that for a second. The guy is a survivor, he's been here for a long time. Biddison has been through two shoulder surgeries and he's lived to tell of it. I'm just really happy for these guys."

(On Tanner Schobel's home run) "I think it kind of let a little bit of air out of the balloon. People could breathe a little bit. You want to get out ahead in a game like this. Again, Columbia is good. They pitch really well. They've held us at bay when it was 3-1 for a long time. Then DeMartini opened it up, followed behind him by Biddison. That was a big swing to get out ahead and it also sets the tone a little bit. That's a freshman on the mound for them from Delaware. He was good but you better be pretty good to hang in with these guys."

Infielder Carson DeMartini

(On his home run in the fifth inning after striking out earlier in the game) "I'm going to be honest. I wasn't really thinking about that at bat. I tried to flush it as quick as possible. Striking out with the bases loaded, that's not fun. The guys before me that led up to that at bat, they put me in the position to do that. Without those guys there, I wouldn't have been able to hit a home run. They could've struck out. They could've popped out. Whatever. I think it was with two outs, but those guys were the ones that put me in that position to be able to hit that ball. He got me out with the pitch I hit out in the first at bat. I learned from it. I flushed it, but I learned from it. I wouldn't say I knew it was coming, but I had a good intuition it was coming."

Infielder Nick Biddison

(On what it means to be part of a team that won a regional title) "It's pretty special. My first year here I think we were dead last in the ACC or second to last. To see all the work pay off, it's special. Trusting this guy [John Szefc] and everything he's doing, it's awesome."

Pitcher Ryan Metz

(On what it was like starting a regional game) "I'm just grateful to coach Szefc and coach Fecteau for just the opportunity that I even had here. They told me I was getting the ball it was honestly just inning one, inning two, just not getting ahead of myself. Not letting the moment be bigger than it needed to be. At the end of the day, it's 60 feet, six inches to the plate, and we're all college baseball players."

SUNDAY, JUNE 5 -- 9:15 P.M. ET

With authority, Carson DeMartini ripped a no-doubter for a three-run home run to right center in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Hokies more cushion. The next batter, Nick Biddison, followed with a home run of his own for back-to-back jacks, pushing Tech's lead to 7-1.

Tech needs just 12 more outs to advance to super regionals.

SUNDAY, JUNE 5 -- 7:23 P.M. ET

In the bottom of the first, shortstop Tanner Schobel hit his first home run of the Blacksburg Regional, a two-run shot to left field to give the Hokies a 2-0 lead early.

Schobel, who is ranked as DI Baseball's No. 2 shortstop nationally, hit his 18th homer of the season.

SATURDAY, JUNE 4 -- 11:57 P.M. ET

Following its second game in the Blacksburg Regional, Virginia Tech head coach John Szefc and select players met with the media on Saturday night for a press conference. For the full transcript.

Head coach John Szefc

Opening Statement:
"Obviously, [it was] a really good night for our guys. You know, it's very rare to see a score like that in an NCAA Tournament game. But you know, our guys played really well, so I'm just kind of happy that obviously with the outcome and the fact that our guys have put themselves in a really good position to come out here and win a regional tomorrow at home. It's a very rare thing, so we won't take for granted and we'll be ready to go tomorrow. [I'm] just happy that the outcome was what it was tonight."

On personnel decisions after the big fourth inning:
"We were trying to keep the game as wide as possible. We wanted to get some strategic guys out of the game. The first guy we talked about taking out was Cade Hunter because he's calling an awful lot. We were just trying to manage the game from a pitching perspective a little bit too. We wanted to try and get guys in the game. We're trying to not use guys that most likely would pitch tomorrow, whether it be as a starter or out of the bullpen. It's a little bit of a juggling act but it's not that hard."

Shortstop Tanner Schobel

On what enabled him to have a bounce back game:
"After a bad game, you just can't let it affect how you play the next couple of games, especially in a regional. You can't let one game affect your whole outcome. It's like hitting and defense. If you have a bad at bat, you can't carry it out into the field or if you make an error, you can't carry it out your next at bat. It's just kind of like flushing the bad stuff and keep moving forward."

Outfielder Nick Biddison

On what makes the lineup special:
"You've just got guys top to bottom. Looking at the stat sheet, I'm not even sure who came in. I think we used everybody off the bench. Gehrig Ebel, I think he might have 20 at bats on the whole year and he hits a home run. We have guys top to bottom, most the guys you guys haven't even seen take at bats yet. I think that having all of us on one offense is very dangerous. And coach [Kurt] Elbin wants us to hit the ball hard. Swing the bat hard. That's what happens."

Outfielder Jack Hurley

On the team offensively:
"If you look at our lineup top to bottom, there's guys that hit the ball. Pretty much everybody can hit above 100 [miles per hour]. If you do that as many times as you can, it's going to be a pretty good night."

SATURDAY, JUNE 4 -- 11:31 P.M. ET

Behind an explosive 14-run inning in the fourth, Virginia Tech baseball defeated Columbia 24-4 Saturday night to advance to the regional final at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.

Six Hokies had multi-hit outings, including Tanner Schobel (3 hits, 3 RBI, 3 runs), who broke the game open with a three-run double to give Tech back the lead in the fourth on its way to its big frame.

The Hokies also scored 15 runs in their win last night, marking just the fourth time a school has scored 15 or more runs in its first two NCAA Tournament games, joining Arizona (2012), Texas A&M (2008) and LSU (2000).

Tech will face the winner of the first game on Sunday between Columbia and Gonzaga, with the Hokies playing at 7 p.m. ET.

Individual game tickets for Sunday's contests are still available starting at just $6.

SATURDAY, JUNE 4 -- 8:35 P.M. ET

In the top of the fourth trailing 2-1, Virginia Tech's Tanner Schobel hit a bases-clearing double off the left-field wall to give the Hokies the lead back.

It marked the shortstop's 17th double of the season and now gives Tech a two-run cushion early.

FRIDAY, JUNE 3 -- 11:45 P.M. ET

Following its first game in the Blacksburg Regional, Virginia Tech head coach John Szefc and select players met with the media on Friday night for a press conference. For the full transcript.

Head coach John Szefc

On the atmosphere:
"The atmosphere was great. I don't know that we're ready to celebrate anything yet to be quite honest with you. I would say though that a night like tonight with the crowd and hosting an NCAA Tournament game here takes a lot. There's a lot of work that goes into getting to this stage amongst coaches, players, and administrators. To have the support of all these people here means a lot. That's a four hour plus game and they hung in there. We're really appreciative of that and I need them to come back. I think our guys enjoy playing in front of that crowd. If you like watching college baseball, that was a good game to watch. There was a lot of offense in that game, ups and downs, and pitchers having to come in and dig deep for things. I think hopefully Blacksburg is getting to be more and more of a baseball place. It's already a football place. It's a sports place in general, but hopefully our guys are starting to turn it into a baseball place too."

On its next opponent in Columbia:
"You get to watch it because it's at the same tournament you're playing. Colombia's good, everybody in this tournament is good. Once it starts the seeds, stats, and records are out the window, it doesn't mean anything. They were very good. They won that game going away 8-2. We knew looking at their numbers that they could hit. To hold Gonzaga to two runs is a pretty complete game. They went out and played and we'll have our hands full tomorrow but so will they."

Outfielder Gavin Cross

On what it was like having family here while playing in a regional:
"My family is the reason why I play and is kind of what brought me here. Anytime they can come it's great. They come to as many games they can. They're at a majority of them. I talk to them after the game. It's fun. It's why I play."

Outfielder Nick Biddison

On what everyone was thinking when Wright State tied the game at five:
"No deficit is too big for us, really. Just try to our play game. We don't really pay attention to the score just try and treat each inning like its own and go pitch by pitch. That's really it."

Pitcher Christian Worley

On how exciting it was being involved in big outs:
"I know the bases were loaded when I came in in the sixth and I just tried to slow the game down and let my stuff do its thing."

FRIDAY, JUNE 3 -- 11:15 P.M. ET

Behind a combined 10 hits from outfielders Nick Biddison and Gavin Cross, Virginia Tech baseball defeated Wright State 15-9 on Friday night at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park in the nightcap of the first day of the Blacksburg Regional.

Tech (42-12) racked up 19 hits on the night – a game that lasted 4 hours, 10 minutes – while it was paced by starter Drue Hackenburg (4.0 IP, 4 K) and relief pitcher Christian Worley (3.1 IP, 5 K) on the mound.

THURSDAY, JUNE 2 -- 4 P.M. ET

Leading up to regionals in the NCAA Tournament, Virginia Tech head coach John Szefc and select players met with the media on Thursday for a press conference. For the full transcript.

Head coach John Szefc

Opening statement:
"We're excited to have the opportunity to host this thing. I think our guys have earned the opportunity. They played tremendous all year and got us in the position to host a regional here in Blacksburg for the first time in nine years. I think it's really cool that we get that chance. I think there's a big advantage to hosting a regional. Your guys get a lot more rest and recovery as opposed to having to travel like Gonzaga just did yesterday. I just give a lot of credit to our coaches and our players for kind of getting us to this point. We look forward to starting to play tomorrow."

On the starting pitcher for the Hokies' opening game:
"[Drue] Hackenberg is going to start tomorrow. We're going to roll him out there on Saturday. At this point, we're just going to go game by game and see how it goes. We just feel Hackenberg is a little bit of a better matchup at this point. It's not a knock on [Griffin Green]. He's gotten us here. One of the reasons we're sitting at this table, is him. It has nothing to do with that. At this stage of the game, at this time of the year, it's all about matchups. Matchups, matchups, matchups. That's it."

Outfielder Gavin Cross

On the confidence level of the team:
"First and foremost, we're playing with confidence and we trust each other regardless of the opponent. We're going to try to play our game; pitch and play good defense, while getting timely hits and just playing together. That's kind of the formula to win."

Catcher Cade Hunter

On what gives the team confidence to make adjustments in-game if they struggle similar to their last game at the ACC Tournament:
"I think Gavin (Cross) nailed it on the head. I think there's been multiple times where we go down quick with one or two outs to start an inning, and then we end up scoring five runs on two outs. It really only takes one big hit for us to get that spark going. We're a dynamic offense and I think at any given moment we can put some runs up on other teams."

Pitcher Griffin Green

On what has it been like to see the fanbase build behind the team and how is that going to be an advantage this weekend:
"We all play with a blue-collared attitude. Like Coach says, we might not have these big names but we go out there and play the game hard every single day, and I think the fan base definitely sees that."

Head coach John Szefc and select student-athletes met with the media following Monday's selection show for the 2022 NCAA baseball tournament. Read some of what they had to say below:

Head Coach John Szefc

(On earning a national seed in the tournament) "This is the kind of day that you work for as a coach pretty much the whole year to try and get your team in a position like this, and you can tell how it's pretty competitive when you talk about the [teams] that didn't get in. It's been a real special year for us. We're happy to be in this position, and now a different type of work begins, so to speak. It's kind of the next stage of your season, playing in an NCAA Regional, and we're lucky enough to be able to do it here in Blacksburg."

Outfielder Gavin Cross

(On playing at home during the postseason) "That's the main goal coming into the year, to make a regional and give ourselves a shot to make it to Omaha. We've done that. We've put ourselves in a great position to play at home in front of our fans. We're looking forward to it."

Utility Player Nick Biddison

(On earning a national seed in the tournament) "It's very exciting. I think it's exciting for Coach Szefc, just to see what he's done for this program, and for guys like me and those who aren't here now, the guys who have gotten this program to where it is. It's pretty exciting and special. For the guys on this team, all that we've been through last year and this year, just the work we've put in. It's really exciting."

(On managing expectations that come with being a national seed) "Everyone has expectations, but we have expectations for ourselves and that's the only expectation we really care about. Sticking to our daily routine, our daily practices and playing the same game that we've always played all year."
