Big fifth inning lifts No. 2/3 Virginia Tech over Virginia 5-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Senior Keely Rochard had another strong outing on Thursday, striking out 12 Virginia hitters over seven innings of work to help lead the No. 2/3 Virginia Tech Hokies past the Cavaliers 5-1.

In addition to her 12 strikeouts, Rochard (17-2) tossed seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and walking two for Virginia Tech (31-5, 14-1).

In the batter's box, the Hokies were led by sophomore Cameron Fagan, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double and an RBI. Senior Darby Trull put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior Meredith Slaw also chipped in for Virginia Tech, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Virginia Tech's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a one-run single off the bat of Slaw. The score remained 5-1 for the rest of the game, as the Hokies took the game one win.
