Quarterback competition progressing through spring ball

Opens in a new window Spring Game Tickets

BLACKSBURG – Members of the Virginia Tech football staff and roster met with the media last week and the quarterback room was a big topic of conversation, with the staff now having a better feel of what that position group can do now.

The leader of the Hokies' quarterback room – Pass Game Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach Brad Glenn – clarified the team's current quarterback competition. The former offensive coordinator at Georgia State has confirmed that Jason Brown and Grant Wells, both mid-year transfers who enrolled this semester, are getting the bulk of the first-team reps.

"I would say their experience," Glenn said on Brown and Wells standing out so far. "Jason's been in big games. In the SEC, with being at South Carolina, there were big moments in big environments. You can't replicate game experience. That has shown early on in spring ball with us, and the same thing with Grant. Grant's had tons of game reps and game throws. He's been in those big environments, and that kind of gave those guys a leg up."

Tech's new play-caller, Tyler Bowen, praised this team's blue-collar attitude they have displayed throughout the duration of spring practices. Bowen spoke highly of the offensive line's willingness to improve throughout the practice sessions, and specifically mentioned the hard work of seniors Silas Dzansi and Johnny Jordan.

Like Glenn, Bowen also commented on the quarterback competition and noted that naming a starter at the end of spring would be ideal, but is not a given as he'll let things play out.

"I think you want to be able to do that for a variety of reasons going into your summer program," Bowen said. "Obviously, having that clear-cut leader of the offense as you go in to throwing routes on air and team organized practices in the summer. I think there are huge benefits from it. But, I'm just interested to see how the last few practices shape out and go from there."

Brown, who grew up in Fredericksburg, Virginia as a Virginia Tech fan, addressed the media for the first time since joining the program and relishes his role as an experienced elder statesman amongst the offense and quarterbacks.

"I can be a leader," Brown said. "I always forget the youngest guy in our room is 18. So, just trying to use the resources to help them. I'm just trying to show them that I can lead and pick up on everything they're trying to install to the best of my ability."

As many of his teammates have noticed, Wells brings a ton of arm strength and two years of starting experience from his time at Marshall. Wells mentioned what he brings to the table, following his time in Huntington.

"I think of myself as a versatile quarterback," Wells said. "I think, when it's all said and done, I'm able to get yards through the air or through the run game. So, I think that adds to the opponents' prep when they start game planning and I'm proud of that."
