Hokies, Eagles set for tip in NCAA’s First Round Friday

VT First Round Notes

In its second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Tournament, the fifth-seeded Virginia Tech women's basketball team is set for tipoff against the 12 seed FGCU Eagles in College Park, Maryland Friday afternoon.

THE SERIES

  • VT is 0-3 all-time against FGCU with the last meeting coming in 2012 at Cassell Coliseum.
  • The teams have met once on a neutral site, at the 2010 Caribbean Challenge in Cancun, Mexico, but never in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Graduate student Emily Lytle has experience co experience competing against the Eagles from her days at Liberty. She averaged 14.7 ppg and 5.5 rebounds in her seven games against FGCU. 

A WIN WOULD...
·       Move the Hokies into the NCAA's Second Round for the second consecutive season. 
 
MISC PROGRAM NOTES
·       For the first time in program history, VT has an All-American. Center Elizabeth Kitley earned Third Team Honors. 
·       Elizabeth Kitley earned the ACC's Player of the Year, becoming the first VT woman to earn the honor. She is the fifth woman in ACC WBB history to win both Freshman of the Year and POY in a career. The others to accomplish the feat are; Dawn Staley (Virginia), Alana Beard (Duke), Crystal Langhorne and Alyssa Thomas (Maryland). 
·       Kitley was also honored with the Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year Award recognizing the top upperclassman student-athlete. 
·        Aisha Sheppard became the program's all-time leading scorer
on Feb. 20 after passing VT Hall of Famer Renee Dennis. She is now the only VT player to score over 1,800 points. Sheppard passed Louisville legend Asia Durr to become the conference's all-time leader in 3-point field goals earlier this season. She now has 399 for her career. Her 93
is a new program best, the previous being the 87 she hit last season. 
·       For the first time, three Hokies were named to the ACC's All-Tournament Team; PG Georgia Amore, G Aisha Sheppard and G Kayana Traylor. Amoore become the first Hokie to ever make the All-Tournament Team First Team.
