Evan Hughes enters his sixth season with the Virginia Tech Sports Network and first as the Director of Broadcasting. In that role, he serves as the radio voice of Virginia Tech men's basketball and will be the sideline reporter for Virginia Tech football and host the pregame and postgame shows. Hughes will also co-host the weekly radio show, Tech Talk Live, with Mike Burnop. Additionally, he oversees the 40+ radio affiliates and the operation of the network on a daily basis.
“The phrase gets thrown around a lot, but this is truly a dream come true for me,” Hughes said of his new appointment. “I grew up coming to Virginia Tech games as a kid and am a proud graduate. My dad played soccer here. My sister graduated here. I am a Hokie through and through. It is an honor to continue to help bring the Hokies’ storylines to life on the radio and now to do so alongside two people I grew up listening to in Bill Roth and Mike Burnop, I could not be more excited to continue providing Hokie fans incredible coverage on The Virginia Tech Sports Network."
For the past five years, Hughes was the Assistant Director of Broadcasting and was the radio voice of Virginia Tech women's basketball and baseball. He was on the call for the run to the 2022 Blacksburg Super Regional and 2023 Final Four.
Hughes joined the broadcast team following his graduation from Virginia Tech’s School of Communication after completing a degree in multimedia journalism and a concentration in sports media and analytics. As a senior, he was named the 2021 recipient of the Jim Nantz Award, honoring the nation’s top collegiate sports broadcaster. He became the first student from Virginia Tech to win the award.
During his time as a student at Tech, Hughes did play-by-play work for ACC Network Extra for four years as an undergraduate. From 2018-2020, he served as the Voice of the St. Cloud Rox in the Northwoods League, where he was named the 2018 Broadcaster of the Year. Additionally, Hughes hosted the Tech Sideline Podcast, covering Virginia Tech athletics.
Hughes grew up in Rockville, Virginia with his mother Lynne, who is the founder and CEO of Comfort Zone Camp, and his father Kelly, a Virginia Tech men’s soccer player (1981-85) under coach Jerry Cheynet. His sister, Jamie, is a 2024 graduate of Virginia Tech.
