BLACKSBURG, Va. --Senior Keely Rochard put up another double-digit strikeout game on Sunday, punching out 17 Syracuse hitters over seven innings of work to help lead the No. 6 Virginia Tech Hokies over the Orange 6-1. This is the second straight ACC sweep for Virginia Tech this season.
In addition to her 17 strikeouts, Rochard (10-2) threw seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and walking none for Virginia Tech (18-3, 6-0).
Offensively, the Hokies were led by freshman Bre Peck, who went 2-for-3 on the day with two home runs and four RBIs. Senior Mackenzie Lawter compiled a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Junior Kelsey Bennett also helped out for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a home run and an RBI.
The Hokies have hit 12 home runs over the last four games, including four today.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Peck put Virginia Tech on the board with a two-out solo home run off senior Ariana Adams.
The Orange failed to push any runs across before the Hokies built on their lead in the fourth inning. Virginia Tech picked up a run on Bennett's two-out solo home run off of Adams, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Hokies.
Virginia Tech held Syracuse scoreless before expanding their lead to 3-0 the following inning. The Hokies notched a run on Lawter's one-out solo home run.
The sixth inning resulted in three runs for the Hokies, all of them scoring on a three-run homer off the bat of Peck to center, bringing the score to 6-0 in favor of Virginia Tech. Syracuse put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Hokies shut them down for the series sweep.
