Virginia Tech to meet No. 25 North Carolina in ACC Tournament semifinal

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – For the first time since 2011, Virginia Tech is playing in an ACC Tournament semifinal game. The Hokies will match-up with No. 25 North Carolina at 9:30 p.m. in the Barclays Center on Friday night. It marks the third straight season Tech and UNC will clash in the conference postseason tournament.

THE SERIES

  • Tech will look to end a four-game losing streak against the Tar Heels Friday night.
  • The Hokies trail in the all-time series, 72-15. Their last win in the series came on Jan. 22, 2020 in double overtime in Blacksburg (79-77).
  • Tech and UNC will face off in the ACC Tournament for the third straight season (0-2). They have met four times in total in this tournament, with the Tar Heels winning all four (2008, 2009, 2020, 2021).

HOKIE HEADLINES

  • Keve Aluma dialed up 20 points, while Justyn Mutts chipped in his fourth double-double of the season (11p/10r) to punch Tech's ticket to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament with an 87-80 win over Notre Dame.
  • Storm Murphy has come alive in Brooklyn, averaging 15.5 points per game and shooting 62.5% (10-16 FG). He's scored double figures in back-to-back games for the first time since Feb. 2 & 5 (vs. Georgia Tech and at Pitt).
  • Tech is shooting 52.3% (57-109) as a team, including a 40.4% clip (19-47) from 3-point range.


PUTTIN' UP POINTS

  • The Hokies scored 87 points in their quarterfinal victory against Notre Dame, marking their second-highest scoring tally of the season. Virginia Tech hasn't scored that many points against an ACC opponent since putting up 95 against Miami on Feb. 19, 2020 (3 OT).
  • Virginia Tech set a new program record for field goals made (31) and field-goal percentage (57.4%) in an ACC Tournament game. 
  • The game marked Virginia Tech's 14th time shooting 50% or better from the field this season.
  • The Hokies also set season highs in free throws made (18) and attempted (24).

THE ALUMA SHOW

  • Keve Aluma had his ninth 20+ point outing and led the Hokies in scoring for 21st time this season against Notre Dame on Thursday.
  • In an eight-possession window between 9:40 and 4:28 in the second half, Aluma scored or assisted on six offensive sets for the Hokies. Aluma scored nine points in five-minute and 12-second period.
  • Through two games in the ACC Tournament, Aluma is averaging 19.5 points and six rebounds.

MURPHY IN MARCH

  • Storm Murphy has upped his game as of late, including impressive 15 and 16-point performances in the last two games. In that span, Murphy is shooting 62.5% from the field and 58.3% from beyond the arc.
  • After Thursday's game, Murphy has had back-to-back double-figure scoring performances on five occasions this season.
  • With four seasons at Wofford under his belt, Murphy is no stranger to big games in March. In 18 career games in the month of March, the point guard has averaged 10.0 points while shooting 41.5% from the field.
