BROOKLYN, N.Y. – After Darius Maddox nailed a buzzer-beater from deep to prolong Virginia Tech's ACC Tournament journey on Wednesday night, the Hokies will regroup to face No. 2 seed Notre Dame in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. at the Barclays Center on Thursday. Tech will be carrying the momentum of a sharp-shooting performance, which saw it hit a program-record 12 3-pointers in an ACC Tournament game against Clemson.

THE SERIES

  • Tech enters Thursday's matchup winners in five of the last six meetings, including the last three.
  • The Hokies trail in the all-time series, 9-7.
  • Tech and Notre Dame have only matched up once in the ACC Tournament. The No. 10 seed Irish defeated the No. 7 seed Hokies, 71-65, in the second round of the 2018 event.
  • Justyn Mutts (24) and Nahiem Alleyne (22) combined for 46 points in Tech's 79-73 win over Notre Dame on Jan. 15 in Blacksburg.
  • Mike Young is 3-1 against Notre Dame as head coach of the Hokies.

A WIN WOULD...

  • Mark the Hokies' 11th win in their last 13 outings.
  • Improve Coach Young to 4-1 against Notre Dame as head coach of the Hokies.
  • Be Tech's first over the Irish in the ACC Tournament.
  • Move the Hokies to 4-8 all-time in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament.
  • Advance Tech to the semifinals of the ACC tournament for just the fourth time (2007, 2008, 2011).
  • Be the Hokies' first quarterfinal win in the ACC Tournament since they beat No. 3 seed Florida State 52-51 in 2011.
  • End ND's seven-game streak of winning its first game of the ACC tourney.

AUTOMADDOX

  • Darius Maddox is no stranger to game-winning shots. Less than two weeks ago at Miami, Maddox found the ball in his hands late in the game and nailed a go-ahead shot from beyond the arc with 12 seconds remaining.
  • The buzzer-beater against Clemson and late dagger against Miami are just two highlights of a breakout campaign for the sophomore shooter. Maddox is shooting 53.7% from beyond the arc this season and has seven double-figure scoring performances.

MURPHY IN MARCH

  • Storm Murphy lit it up from beyond the arc on Wednesday night, shooting 5-8 from deep, including 4-4 in the first half. His four first-half buckets came in consecutive fashion, as he scored 12 points in a row for Tech between 5:21 and 2:14 in the first half.
  • As important as his first half shots were to give the Hokies some wiggle room, the graduate student hit another big 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining in regulation to put Tech back on top.
  • Murphy's five makes from deep tied the school record for 3-pointers made by a single player in an ACC Tournament game. Jarrell Eddie also made five against Miami in the first round of the 2014 ACC Tournament.

MORE THAN 40

  • Wednesday night's game was Virginia Tech's first contest to go into overtime since the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
  • The five-minute period started off with six of Keve Aluma's 19 points on the evening. Justyn Mutts split a pair of free throws late, which kept Tech in striking distance. Maddox wrapped up the night with the shot heard around The Bubble, prolonging Tech's tournament stay.

UP NEXT

  • The winner between Virginia Tech and Notre Dame will advance to Friday's second semifinal at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET.
