BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech earned its second-straight double-digit ACC win on Wednesday night as the Hokies downed Georgia Tech, 81-66.
A memorable night for all, Keve Aluma and Justyn Mutts both eclipsed 1,000 career points during the game. Storm Murphy also matched his season high in scoring with 18 points.
1K CLUB
- Mutts was the first to hit the milestone with 5:16 remaining in the first half. The bucket, a layup assisted by David N'Guessan, was the first of four that Mutts scored.
- The Millville, N.J., native has scored 437 of his 1,006 career points while playing at Virginia Tech. Mutts scored 168 in his freshman year at High Point and 401 in one season at Delaware.
- Aluma passed the mark with 13:53 to play in the second half after hauling in an offensive rebound, finishing a layup through contact and earning a trip to the free-throw line. The points were a portion of his game-high 24 he scored.
- In his time in maroon and orange, Aluma has registered 678 of his 1,004 points. In two seasons of play at Wofford, the Berlin, Md., native had 326 points.
ALL-AROUND THREAT
- Mutts can grab anyone's attention with his athleticism and energy, but his ability to score, rebound and facilitate on offense can go under the radar.
- The 6-foot-7 forward either leads or is tied for the most rebounds (7.3), assists (3.1), steals (1.1) and blocks (.8) per game. His 56.5 percent field-goal percentage is best among the Hokies' starters, as well.
- In the last three games, Mutts registered at least four assists. He's the only player to achieve that for Tech this season.
PUTTIN' THE PIECES TOGETHER
- The Hokies snapped a two-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets on Wednesday and earned Mike Young his first win against Georgia Tech.
- Only one of the visitor's players reached double figures in the contest – the ACC's second-leading scorer Michael Devoe.
- Wednesday's game was the second matchup in a row that Tech won by double digits. The last time the Hokies accomplished that in back-to-back games was Jan. 27 and 30, 2021 (Notre Dame and Virginia).
- The last time Virginia Tech put together three-straight ACC wins while scoring 80-or-more points was the 2017-18 season (vs. North Carolina, at Notre Dame and at Boston College) between Jan. 22 and Jan. 3, 2018.
