BLACKSBURG – In a night that saw Keve Aluma and Justyn Mutts register their 1,000th career points, Virginia Tech powered its way to an 81-66 win against Georgia Tech.

Aluma led the way with 24 points and seven rebounds, dropping 15 in the first half. Two other players Stormy Murphy (18) and Mutts (10) joined him in double figures. Mutts flirted with a double-double, hauling in eight boards.

Virginia Tech shot 50 percent or higher from beyond the arc (50 percent) and the floor (60 percent) in the first half.

Virginia Tech's defense held Georgia Tech to only 40 percent shooting from the field. The Hokies also limited Jordan Usher to 3-of-12 shooting and eight points in the game. The Yellow Jackets did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with seven offensive rebounds and managed two second-chance points while Virginia Tech cleared 27 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

The Hokies grabbed the lead with 17:32 left in the first half and the Yellow Jackets never took it back. With a 30-25 advantage, Virginia Tech put together an 8-0 run towards the end of the half. After exchanging buckets, the Hokies carried a 46-35 lead into the break.

Following intermission, Virginia Tech kept widening that lead, expanding it to 65-53 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Nahiem Alleyne's three, to grow the lead to 72-53 with 4:56 to go in the contest. The Yellow Jackets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 81-66 win. Virginia Tech took care of business in the paint, recording 20 of its 35 points in the lane.
