TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Hunter Cattoor put up a career-high 27 points, shooting 9-11 from beyond the arc, as Virginia Tech downed Florida State, 85-72, in a historic shooting performance.
The Hokies picked up their first win in Tallahassee since Feb. 24, 1990, and snapped a three-game losing skid. With its loss, Florida State has now lost two home games in the same season for the first time since 2017-18.
Cattoor's nine makes from deep tied Justin Robinson's single-game school record that was set on January 26, 2019 vs. Syracuse. The 18 treys also set a new single-game ACC record for Tech for 3-point field goals made.
Complementing Cattoor's performance was freshman Sean Pedulla. The Edmond, Oklahoma native had a career-high 20 points, shooting 6-7 from beyond the arc. In the first half alone, Pedulla shot 5-5 from deep and led all scorers at the break with 15.
Virginia Tech took advantage of excellent ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 16 assists on 32 made field goals. Individually, Storm Murphy was on top of the distribution list for the Hokies with five assists.
The Virginia Tech defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 14 Florida State turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Darius Maddox led the way individually for the Hokies with three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 27-25, Virginia Tech went on an 11-0 run with 4:24 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Cattoor, to take a 36-27 lead. The Hokies then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 39-31 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its 3-point shooting in the period, knocking down nine shots to account for 27 of its 39 points.
With the score at 62-60 with 7:25 remaining, Tech went on a 14-0 run that was finished off by Cattoor's three, to grow the lead to 76-60 with 4:39 to go in the contest. The Seminoles narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 85-72 win. Virginia Tech shot well from 3-point range in the half, hitting nine shots from deep to score 27 of its 46 points.
