Alleyne and Mutts show out in Tech's win over Notre Dame

BLACKSBURG – A second-half surge and two big showings from Nahiem Alleyne and Justyn Mutts spurred Virginia Tech on to a 79-73 win over Notre Dame on Saturday night.

The Hokies (9-7, 1-4 ACC) had four players score in double figures, led by Mutts, who had 24 points and seven rebounds. Alleyne added 22 points and Keve Aluma chipped in 17 points and eight rebounds. Storm Murphy tallied 12 points, including a dagger 3-pointer late in regulation.

Virginia Tech out-rebounded Notre Dame 28-25 in Saturday's game, paced by Aluma's eight boards.

How It Happened

Virginia Tech struggled out of the gate as Notre Dame put together an early 10-0 run between 18:17 and 16:06 in the first half. The Fighting Irish had zero turnovers in the first half and shot 6-11 from beyond the arc to take a 40-32 lead in the first half.

Virginia Tech narrowed its deficit to 62-57 before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Aluma's jumper, to seize a 66-62 lead with 5:22 to go in the contest. Notre Dame used free throws to even up the score at 73 with 1:26 left. Mutts then responded with two free throws of his own, followed by Murphy's 3-pointer to seal the victory for Tech.
