BLACKSBURG, Va. --Senior Peyton Alford was mowing people down on Saturday, punching out eight Toledo hitters over 5.2 innings of work to help lead the Virginia Tech Hokies over the Rockets 7-1.
In addition to his eight strikeouts, Alford (2-4) tossed 5.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits and walking three for Virginia Tech (25-17). Senior Jaison Heard also made an impact on the mound for the Hokies, throwing 3.1 shutout innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.
At the plate, the Hokies were led by freshman TJ Rumfield, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a home run, three walks and two RBIs.
