Alford throws nine strikeouts in Tech's 8-2 loss to Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. --Senior Peyton Alford had everything working on Friday, striking out nine Clemson hitters over 6.2 innings of work, but it was not enough as the No. 13 Virginia Tech Hokies fell to the Tigers 8-2.

In addition to his nine strikeouts, Alford (0-1) tossed 6.2 innings, giving up eight runs, four earned, on eight hits and walking three for Virginia Tech (9-7, 5-5).

In the batter's box, the Hokies were paced by freshman Tanner Schobel, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a double. Freshman TJ Rumfield put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-5 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Freshman Carson Jones came across to score the lone run of the inning for Virginia Tech and get them on the board.

The Tigers then rallied to score five runs and take a 5-1 lead before the Hokies got back on the board in the fifth. Virginia Tech scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Rumfield, which brought the score to 5-2 in favor of the Tigers. The Hokies were unable to get any closer, as Clemson added three runs to their tally on the way to an 8-2 final.
