CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Virginia Tech put on a sharpshooting clinic Friday afternoon at the Spectrum Center on its way to an 86-49 win against St. Bonaventure.
Hunter Cattoor scored a career-high 21 points in Tech's dominating performance. The junior shot 5-for-5 from beyond the arc, tying his career high in three-point field goals made.
Virginia Tech led throughout the entire contest, jumping out to a 13-0 lead from the tip. St. Bonaventure, which shot 33.3 percent from the field, didn't register a bucket until 13:42 remained in the first half.
As a whole, the Hokies made 13 three-point field goals, which surpasses their previous season high of 12 set against Cornell.
Storm Murphy also netted a season high in scoring with 18 points. The graduate transfer from Wofford shot 4-for-7 from beyond the arc, including 3-for-4 in the first half.
Virginia Tech did a great job disrupting St. Bonaventure shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Aluma's two rejections led the way individually for the Hokies.
How It Happened
Virginia Tech started out the scoring by going on a 13-0 run, culminating in a three from Nahiem Alleyne, to take an early lead with 15:15 left in the first half. The Hokies then added nine points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 42-20 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down eight shots to account for 24 of its 42 points.
Following intermission, Virginia Tech kept widening that lead, expanding it to 72-40 before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Darius Maddox's three, to grow the lead to 83-40 with 3:59 to go in the contest. The Bonnies narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 86-49 win. Virginia Tech got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 19 of its 44 total points.
