BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech football came away with some new highs in statistical categories after its 38-26 setback at Miami (Fla.) on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium. You can view those tidbits below.

Special Teams gets it done
With 6:25 remaining in the third quarter and the Hokies down 11 points, John Parker Romo executed an onside kickoff that went through the hands of Miami and was picked up by Kenodré Ko. It was the first onside attempt for the Hokies since the Liberty game on Nov. 7, 2020. The last time Tech successfully converted on an onside kick was against North Carolina on Oct. 10, 2020. Going back to 1986, this was just the 10th successful onside kick.

Punter Peter Moore punted the ball six times for a career-high 51.8-yards average. He is currently averaging 45.5 yards per punt, which puts him in second place for the best average in a season behind Oscar Bradburn's 46.5 average in 2019.

Defense stops Miami's ground game
The Hurricanes came into the game averaging 133.8 rushing yards per game. The Tech defense held them to just 54 yards. This was the fewest rushing yards allowed by the Tech D since holding Georgia Tech to 53 yards in 2019.

Blumrick returns to the field
Transfer quarterback Connor Blumrick returned to the field for the first time since the Notre Dame game on Oct. 9, coming back from an injury. He rushed the ball 20 times for a career-high 132 yards, leading all Tech rushers. His seven-yard pass to Kaleb Smith in the third quarter was his first career touchdown pass.
