Defensive effort leads Virginia Tech over Navy 77-57

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Virginia Tech men's basketball team kept Navy to just 12 percent from deep in a 3-for-25 shooting performance on the way to a 77-57 victory over the Midshipmen on the road Friday.

The Hokies (2-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Keve Aluma, who had 20 points and six rebounds. Hunter Cattoor added a career-high 19 points, four assists and two steals and Storm Murphy helped out with 11 points and six rebounds.

Virginia Tech out-rebounded Navy 35-29 in Friday's game, led by Justyn Mutts' seven boards.

Virginia Tech's defense held Navy to only 12 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 39.2 percent from the field. The Hokies also limited John Carter Jr. to 0-of-7 shooting from downtown and four points in the game. The Midshipmen did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with seven offensive rebounds and managed eight second chance points while Virginia Tech cleared 27 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After falling behind 2-0, Virginia Tech went on an 11-0 run with 19:27 left in the first half to take an 11-2 lead. The Hokies then added nine points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 45-27 advantage. Virginia Tech capitalized on seven Navy turnovers in the period, turning them into 12 points on the other end of the floor.

Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on an 11-0 run to grow the lead to 60-39 with 11:20 to go in the contest. The Midshipmen narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 77-57 win. Virginia Tech took care of business in the paint, recording 18 of its 32 points in the lane.
