Virginia Tech travels on short week to Boston College

BLACKSBURG – After a 26-17 win at Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech football turns the page for a short week of preparation before traveling to Boston College for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff Friday on ESPN2.

The Hokies (4-4, 2-2 ACC) and Eagles (4-4, 0-4 ACC) met a season ago in Lane Stadium, a game that the Hokies won 40-14 after forcing five BC turnovers. Tech holds a 19-10 all-time advantage over Boston College, including a 3-2 mark under head coach Justin Fuente.

Against the Yellow Jackets, Tech received explosive offensive performances from WR Tré Turner and RB Malachi Thomas, who recorded 187 receiving yards and 103 rushing yards, respectively. The game was Turner's fourth career 100-yard receiving game and his 187 yards are the fifth most receiving yards by a Tech player since at least 1987. Thomas rushed for over 100 yards for the second straight game, making him the first Tech true freshman running back to accomplish that since Kevin Jones did vs. Virginia (11/17/01) and Miami (12/1/01). Saturday marked the first time the Hokies had a 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver in the same game since North Carolina (10/10/20) when RB Khalil Herbert rushed or 138 yards and TE James Mitchell hauled in 103 receiving yards.

QB Braxton Burmeister completed 15 of 25 passes for a career-high 254 yards with two touchdowns, including a career-long 69-yard TD to Turner. WR Tayvion Robinson recorded a four-yard touchdown reception to up his season total to a team-high four TDs.

Defensively, LB Alan Tisdale led the team with 12 tackles including a career-high 2.5 TFL and now leads the team with 65 total tackles. Facing his two brothers, DE Jaylen Griffin recorded a strip sack which S Nasir Peoples recovered, his first career fumble recovery. CB Armani Chatman recorded his first career interception with just over three minutes remaining in the game, giving the offense the chance to run out the clock and seal the win.

While the Hokies were in Atlanta, Boston College lost a 21-6 contest at Syracuse. The Eagles used two quarterbacks in the game as Dennis Grosel and Emmett Morehead threw for 93 and 87 yards, respectively. WR Zay Flowers led the game in receiving, totaling six receptions for 116 yards with a 44-yard long. LB Vinny DePalma recorded a game-high 11 tackles including 1.0 TFL in the loss to the Orange.
