Lynchburg, Va. – Michael Shepheard and Alvaro Saez-Royuela Ariza clinched spots in the ITA Super Regionals with quarterfinal finishes in the ITA Atlantic Regional on Saturday. Hugo Maia and Ariza will also team up in doubles of the Super Regional which will take place in Norfolk, Va. on Oct. 23-25.
Shepheard battled back after dropping his first set to earn a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 vicotry over his opponent from William & Mary, while Ariza defeated his Radford challenger in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
Ariza and Maia also had two strong performances in doubles, winning 8-6 against their opposition from William & Mary and a decisive 8-1 win against Liberty.
DAY ONE
Alvaro Saez-Royuela Ariza, Frank Thompson, and Michael Shepheard find themselves in the Round of 16 – one win away from qualification to the next round.
Scott Sculley, Matt Harper, and Alex Ix earned wins in the first round, but fell in the Round of 32 matches on Friday.
In doubles, Ryan Bernstine and Harper grabbed an 8-4 win in the Round of 32. They now join Donatoand Ix, Hugo Maia and Ariza, and Shepheard and Thompson in the Round of 16. Those squads will need two wins on Saturday to qualify for the Super Regionals.
Play is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Indoor matches can be streamed via PlaySight.
