Virginia Tech takes on George Washington in 2021-22 season opener

BLACKSBURG – The Hokies will be traveling to Washington D.C. to take on George Washington this Saturday, October 2nd. The event begins at 10 a.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.
 
"I'm very happy to be able to start the season, now, in October, with a travel meet," said head coach Sergio Lopez Miro. "We have a very young team. We have a lot of illnesses and won't be able to take everybody, but I'm very excited to see how they react, adapt, and how they represent Virginia Tech Swimming and Diving."
 
LAST SEASON - MEN
 
The Virginia Tech men swimming and diving team finished last year with a record-breaking season. They placed third at the ACC Championship, the program's highest finish in six years. They broke 11 school records and earned 11 medals. 
 
At the NCAA Championship, the men placed 11th which is the highest team finish in school history. At the conclusion of competition, thirteen All-American Honors were earned, and nine school records were broken. Antani Ivanov, Carles Coll Marti, Youssef Ramadan, and Sam Tornqvist had impressive performances wrapping-up last season; They will each be returning for another year. 
 
LAST SEASON – WOMEN
 
The Virginia Tech women had a memorable season, as well. The Hokies finished fourth at the ACC Championship with 832 points, almost doubling their score from 2020, 469 points. During competition, five school records were broken.
 
At the NCAA Championship, the women finished with the second highest overall finish in school history with 21st place. They broke the previous highest score record by earning 55 points. Emma Atkinson, Reka Gyorgy, and Sarah Shackelford had standout performances and will all be returning for the upcoming season. Four more school records were broken, and six All-American Honors were earned.
 
GEORGE WASHINGTON
 
The George Washington men hold the number one spot in the A-10 preseason poll. They won the conference title last season and have won four out of the last five. The women hold second in the poll, trailing Richmond.
 
"I competed [at George Washington] as a swimmer," said Lopez Miro. "It is going to be a great place for us to get behind the team and work. We are training pretty hard and getting to this phase of the season where the kids are tired, so it's exciting to see them race."
