Hokies add four signees in recent weeks

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech track and field welcomed four new signees over the past few weeks, bolstering the squad with both experienced and young talent. Khalil Bedoui, Kennedy Harrison, Torrence Walker, and Rebecca Mammel put pen to paper and will join the Hokies' ranks this upcoming season.

Two big-time throwers, Rebecca Mammel and Khalil Bedoui, bring NCAA experience to the Hokies. Mammel signs with the Hokies from Michigan State on a graduate transfer. Mammel was named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week earlier this year in the indoor season after her weight throw PR of 72' 9.75" (22.19m). At the 2021 BIG 10 Outdoor Championships, Mammel took bronze in the hammer with her personal best throw of 208' 9" (63.63m)

Bedoui joins Mammel in the throws department, signing with the Hokies on a transfer from Eastern Michigan. Bedoui boasts PRs of 211' 8" (64.51m) in the hammer and 70' 7" (21.51m) in the weight throw, and his weight throw record stands as the fourth best throw in EMU history and earned him fourth place at the 2021 MAC Indoor Championships.

The sprints group welcomed two new athletes as well, with Kennedy Harrison and Torrence Walker joining Coach Tim Vaught's squad. Walker committed to the Hokies following a historic senior season of high school, sweeping the 100m, 200m, and 400m dashes at the West Virginia Class AAA state meet. The Wheeling Park product boasts personal bests of 10.47 in the 100m, 21.14 in the 200m, and 48.45 in the 400m.

Kennedy Harrison joins the Hokies as a freshman transfer out of Northwestern State University, after his time at DeSoto High School in Dallas, Texas. Harrison brings measurable experience and speed to the Tech squad with collegiate personal bests of 10.42 in the 100m, 20.87 in the 200m, and 47.87 in the 400m.

"Kennedy is a very talented sprinter from Texas," Associate Head Coach Tim Vaught said. "He's going to fit very well in our championship program. Kennedy will specialize in the 200m, 400m, 4x100, and 4x400 relays. I'm super excited to start working with him."

As the offseason months continue, the Hokies are adding the right pieces to a strong returning squad. 11 Hokies and the men's 4x400m relay competed at the NCAA Championships this May, following a second-place finish on the men's side at the ACC Outdoor Championships.
