CHARLOTTE, N.C. --Despite picking up six hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Virginia, Virginia Tech was unable to push across more runs, as the Hokies were defeated by the Cavaliers 3-2 Tuesday.
Senior Peyton Alford (2-6) got the ball to start for Virginia Tech (27-24, ) and took the loss. Junior Shane Connolly was a bright spot for the Hokies, coming out of the bullpen and throwing five shutout innings, allowing one hit, with no walks and four strikeouts.
In the batter's box, the Hokies were paced by freshman Tanner Schobel, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBIs. Freshman TJ Rumfield furnished a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies were trailing 3-0 in the sixth inning when they first put runs on the board. Virginia Tech plated two runs when Schobel left the yard with freshman Gehrig Ebel aboard. The Hokies were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
