BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Six Virginia Tech pitchers got 12 strikeouts, but the Hokies fell to the No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 8-2 Thursday.
Senior Peyton Alford (2-5) got the ball to start for Virginia Tech (27-21, 16-18) and took the loss. Sophomore Jonah Hurney was a bright spot for the Hokies, coming out of the bullpen and throwing two shutout innings, allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.
At the plate, the Hokies were led by sophomore Kevin Madden, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double. Freshman Jack Hurley compiled a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman TJ Rumfield also helped out for Virginia Tech, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.
