RALEIGH, N.C. --Senior Peyton Alford had everything working on Friday, fanning eight NC State hitters over seven innings of work, but it was not enough as the No. 22 Virginia Tech Hokies fell to the Wolf Pack 3-1.

In addition to his eight strikeouts, Alford (1-3) tossed seven innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits and walking three for Virginia Tech (21-13, 15-10). Freshman Matthew Siverling also made an impact on the mound for the Hokies, throwing one shutout inning while allowing no hits.

Freshman Dayne Leonard led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with a double, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Jack Hurley put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-5 with a double. Freshman TJ Rumfield also chipped in, going 2-for-4 for Virginia Tech.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 3-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the ninth inning. Virginia Tech got on the board thanks to Leonard's RBI double with two outs. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.
