No. 17 Hokies travel to face Flames in midweek tilt

BLACKSBURG – Coming off of a series sweep against Wake Forest, No. 17 Virginia Tech baseball is prepping to face Liberty on Tuesday in a midweek matchup with the game being broadcasted on ESPN+.

The Hokies (19-9, 14-7 ACC) and Flames (21-8, 8-1 ASUN) will meet for the first time since March 26, 2019. Tech leads the all-time series 40-28 and Liberty is 3-2 in the last five meetings.

Freshman Gavin Cross was recognized this week as the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week following his outstanding performances on the road against ETSU and Wake Forest.


ON THE CALL

The matchup will be broadcast on ESPN+, with Alan York (play-by-play) and Mark Warner (analyst) on the call all weekend, while Bryant Johnson will broadcast on Virginia Tech Sports Network.

LAST TIME OUT

The Hokies went undefeated in Winston-Salem against the Demon Deacons. Tech hit six home runs on Saturday and 10 on the weekend, the most in school history. Peyton Alford, Anthony Simonelli and Chris Gerard all had impressive outings for the Hokies.

Gavin Cross went 6-for-14 on the weekend with two home runs and had an extra-base hit in all three games.  

PLAYER TO WATCH

Gavin Cross was recently named ACC Player of the Week after a standout performance against ETSU and Wake Forest. The freshman hit for the cycle on Tuesday against the Buccaneers and batted .500 (10-for-20) in his last four games and currently leads the ACC in batting average (.400).
