Tech men dominate in Durham

DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving team wrapped up their first ACC contest with the Tech men coming out on top and the Tech women ending in a draw against No.21 Duke. The men won 171.5-120.5 and the women tied at 150-150.

"It has been eight months since we have been able to race," head coach Sergio Lopez Miro said. "The girls fought very well to tie the meet. The guys did a very good job helping us walk away with two wins. I am proud of our team and the way they fought."


HOKIES MEN
The Tech men came out strong with a first and second place finish in the 200 Medley relay. Forest Webb, AJ Pouch, Youssef Ramadan and Thomas Hallock were victorious with a time of 1:29.35. Their teammates Sam Tornqvist, Henry Claesson, Antani Ivanov and David Herbert finished just behind with a time of 1:29.98.

Filippo Dal Maso and Brennen Doss picked up second and third in the 1000 freestyle with times of 9:23.82 and 9:26.32.

Blake Manoff led a one, two pair in the 200 freestyle. Manoff posted a time of 1:36.31 with Lane Stone just behind him at 1:38.88.

Forest Webb led a top-three sweep in the 100 backstroke. Webb posted a time of 48.56 while Sam Tornqvist (48.63) and Will Koeppen (49.72) followed behind him. Later, Tornqvist led Webb in the 200 back with a time of 1:46.52. Webb finished second at 1:48.27.

Tech had a one, three finish in the 100 breaststroke with Keith Myburgh in 55.15 and AJ Pouch coming in at 55.43. Pouch later led Myburgh in a two pair in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:00.36. Myburgh finished behind with a time of 2:01.76.

Ivanov took first place in the 200 Butterfly (1:47.08) with Dylan Eichberg following in third with a time of 1:48.71.   

Ramadan led a top-three sweep in the 50 freestyle. Ramadan posted a time of 20.29 while a pair of seniors followed behind with David Herbert (20.42) and Thomas Hallock (20.50). 

Tech had three men place in the top-5 in the 500 freestyle. Lane Stone carried first-place at 4:31.80 with Dal Maso (4:35.94) and Doss (4:36.06) following in third and fourth place.

Noah Zawadzki dominated the boards finishing first-place in both the 1M and 3M. Taj Cole finished third in the 1M and fourth in the 3M.


TECH WOMEN

The Tech women were victorious in nine events, including the 400 freestyle relay to tie the meet. Sarah Shackelford, Caroline Bentz, Joelle Vereb and Abby Andrusin posted a time of 3:23.21 in the last event of the day tying the score to 150all.

Freshman Chase Travis made an impressive ACC debut leading a top-three sweep in the 500 freestyle and a one, two finish in the 1000 freestyle. Brooke Travis finished behind in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:08.24. Loulou Vos and Brooke Travis finished second and third in the 500 free with times of 4:55.77 and 4:56.50. Vos placed just in front of Chase Travis in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.47.

Freshman Caroline Bentz also made a statement taking first place in both the 100 (54.47) and 200 backstroke (1:56.92) while contributing to the 400 relay victory. Emily Melius took second place in the 200 back with a time of 2:00.11. 

Reka Gyorgy took first place in the 200 butterfly at 2:00.32 and fourth in the 200 breaststroke at 2:19.38.

Shackelford led a one, three, four finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.14 while a pair of juniors followed behind with Anna Landon (23.63) and Abby Larson (23.78). Shackelford and Larson finished top-3 again in the 100 free clocking in times of 50.22 and 52.26.

Vereb finished first in the 100 fly with a time of 55.53. Karisa Franz and Molly Sheffield followed in third and fifth with times of 56.54 and 56.89.
