Hokies drop outing at NC State

RALEIGH – In the final match of the fall schedule, the Virginia Tech volleyball team fell 3-0 on the road against NC State for the second straight match on Friday evening inside James T. Valvano Arena. 

The Hokies (5-4, 4-4 ACC) drop their third straight match on their road swing. Tech does finish the fall slate above .500. NC State (4-4, 4-4) won their fourth straight contest of the season and tie the Hokies at 4-4 in the ACC standings. 

Despite the loss, setter Sarah Jane Lynch had an all-around performance recording season highs in assists with 12, aces with two and total blocks with two. Senior Marisa Cerchio registered a team-high seven kills and added two total blocks on the defensive end. 

Libero Logan Mosley and graduate student Kaity Smith combined for 20 total digs while senior Kylie Thomas tied her season-high in digs with four on the night. 

The Wolfpack had stellar performances all over the court as junior Jade Parchment notched a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Senior Melissa Evans tallied a near double-double with nine kills and 12 digs. As a team NC State racked up seven aces which are their second highest ace total of the season. 

THE GAME

The Hokies came out competitive taking an early 7-6 lead to kick things off in the first. Knotted at 12-12 the Wolfpack caught fire and went on a 5-0 run which put them up 17-12. NC State closed out the stanza with four consecutive points to take the set 25-15.

The second was all Hokies from the start as they held a consistent lead and led 14-11 midway through the stanza. The Wolfpack gained momentum and went on a crucial 7-1 run. That run would be key as NC State did not look back and won the stanza 25-19.

Looking to close out the match, the Wolfpack came out in the third on fire and took an 11-6 lead midway through. Another big run for NC State gave them the cushion they needed in third going up 17-6 after the 6-0 spurt. The Wolfpack finished off the set 25-10 and won the match 3-0.

  • Senior Thomas has now scooped up over 500 digs in her career putting her at 503 in total. 

 

  • Libero Mosley has scooped up double-digit digs in her last eight matches. 

 

  • Senior Cerchio had a team-high seven kills and now sits with 110 on the season and is second on the team in total kills. 

 

  • Setter Lynch recorded season highs in four categories including assists (12), blocks (2), aces (2) and kills (1).
