Three Hokies earn All-State honors

Carol Robertson has been named Coach of the Year and Alyssa Montgomery has been named the Rookie Golfer of the Year on the 2020 VaSID All-State University Division Women's Golf team, in voting by the Virginia Sports Information Directors organization.

Montgomery and Emily Mahar have been named to the organization's first team All-State. This is the third selection for Mahar and first as a member of the first team. Montgomery makes the first team in her first season of collegiate golf.

Robertson earns Coach of the Year honors for the second time, both occurring in the last three seasons. The only coach in Virginia Tech women's golf history, Robertson has led the Hokies to an unprecedented rise. During the Fall 2020 season, the Hokies earned their highest Golfstat.com ranking of No. 20 nationally. At the unexpected end of the spring season in March, they were ranked No. 26 in Golfstat and No. 23 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.

Montgomery, a freshman from Knoxville, Tennessee, was second on the team in scoring average this past season, at 72.55. She was also second in Crunch Time scoring average, at 72.43 and rounds of par-or-better, at seven. She had five top 20 finishes in the team's seven events, highlighted by a third-place finish at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic and a 10th at the Princess Anne Invitational, which the Hokies won.

Mahar, a junior from Brisbane, Australia, led the Hokies in scoring in the 2019-20 season with a school-record 71.60 and in Crunch Time scoring average, at 72.00. She led the team in rounds of par-or-better, with 13. She had a total of six top 20 finishes, highlighted by her first collegiate victory at the Princess Anne Invitational in Virginia Beach, Virginia in October, which led to her being named the ACC Player of the Month for October.

Jana Melichova of ODU was named the 2020 VaSID Player of the Year. Mahar and Montgomery were joined on the first team by Melichova and Maria Onosato of ODU and Virginia Bossi of UVa. The second team is comprised of Jayde Dudley of Radford, Kate Owens and Kendall Turner of JMU, Riley Smyth of UVa and Cindy Zhou of William & Mary.
