ACC Update, Final Day: Hokies with six A finalists

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men's swim team had a strong morning session as 13 Hokies are set to compete in Saturday's finals, including six A finalists at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
 
Tech juniors Sam Tornqvist and Lane Stone got the Hokies started as both qualified for the championship finals of the 200 backstroke with times of 1:40.62 and 1:42.50, respectively. Freshman Forest Webb made the consolation finals with a 1:42.97 while fellow freshman Will Koeppen made the C final with 1:46.33. Tornqvist and Stone improved upon their Virginia Tech top-10 times while Webb entered the list for the first time.
 
In the 100 freestyle, junior Thomas Hallock made the A final with a 42.90, moving him to third on the Tech all-time list.
 
Freshman AJ Pouch recorded the top-time in the prelims of the 200 breaststroke, turning in a 1:53.72 and moving him to second all-time in Tech history. Sophomore Keith Myburgh qualified for the consolation finals with 1:56.08 to move to fifth on the Tech list. Senior Simon Shi made the C final in 1:58.54.
 
The Hokies rounded out the morning with three qualifying for the 200 butterfly. Sophomores Antani Ivanov and Blake Manoff made the championship final with times of 1:42.48 and 1:42.79, respectively. Fellow soph Dylan Eichberg will compete in the consolation finals after posting 1:45.06 to move into the Tech top-10 list.
 
Freshman Ryan Vipavetz along with sophomores Filippo Dal Maso and Brennen Doss will compete in the 1650 freestyle. Heats will begin at 4 p.m.

Virginia Tech sophomore Blake Manoff broke the Virginia Tech 100 butterfly record on Friday during the prelims of the 2020 ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships. He led 13 Hokies qualifying for the evening finals.
 
Manoff turned in a 45.61 to break his teammate, Antani Ivanov's record set last season at ACCs. The time qualified Manoff for the championship finals tonight. Ivanov also made the championship finals after swimming a 46.13 in the prelims. The time bested his previous record of 46.15. Manoff's time surpassed the 2019 NCAA invite time cut while Ivanov hit a B standard.
 
In the 400 IM, Filippo Dal Maso led the Hokies with a championship final qualifying time of 3:45.36. He improved upon his Tech top-10 performance from last season to move into second on the list. Keith Myburgh qualified for the consolation final (3:49.94) while Dylan Eichberg turned made the cut for the C final. Eichberg moved into the top-10 list with his 3:51.88.
 
Lane Stone made the championship final in the 200 free with a qualifying time of 1:34.67. Tech got three into the finals of the 100 breast with AJ Pouch in the consolation (53.08) and Cobi Lopez Miro (54.62) and Simon Shi (54.72) in the C heat. Pouch's time bumped him to second all-time in program history.
 
The Hokies wrapped up the prelims with four qualifying for the 100 back finals. Sam Tornqvist (46.66) and Forest Webb (46.91) will swim the consolation finals. Will Koeppen (47.71) and Thomas Hallock (47.72) are set to compete in the C.
 
Tech will begin finals at 6 p.m. this evening with the 100 butterfly.

Virginia Tech junior Thomas Hallock broke the Virginia Tech 50 freestyle record on Thursday during the prelims at the 2020 ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships.
 
Hallock turned in a 19.32, breaking the previous mark of 19.34 set by former Hokie swimmer and recent graduate Ian Ho. Hallock's time was enough to propel him into the A finals of the event. It also surpassed the 2019 NCAA invite time.
 
The Hokies qualified four for the 500 free finals. Antani Ivanov posted a 4:17.52 to qualify for the A finals and move into second on the Tech Top-10 list. Lane Stone and Filippo Dal Maso both qualified for the B finals while Brennen Doss will compete in the C.
 
In the 200 IM, Sam Tornqvist posted an NCAA B cut of 1:45.29 to qualify for the championship finals. AJ Pouch and Dylan Eichberg are set for the C finals.
 
The Hokies will be back in the pool at 6 p.m. for the finals beginning with the 500 freestyle and concluding with the 200 free relay.
