RALEIGH, N.C. – Virginia Tech wrestling came up just short Friday night as NC State took a 21-18 victory in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Hokies (11-2, 2-2 ACC) had two pins on the night from Bryce Andonian and Stanley Smeltzer, but the bonus points were not enough to overcome the Wolfpack (14-0, 4-0 ACC). No. 2 Hunter Bolen picked up a decision win in the marquee match of the night, a 3-1 win over No. 3 Trent Hidlay.
MATCH NOTES
- After the dual started at 149 pounds, Andonian wasted no time in securing six points for the Hokies with a pin in 2:17 over A.J. Leitten. The freshman improves to 16-5 on the season, 7-3 in dual matches. Andonian is outscoring his dual opponents 33-9.
- In the biggest matchup of the night, Bolen came out on top of a 3-1 decision win over Trent Hidlay. The Christiansburg native, who recently was ranked the No. 1 184-pound wrestler by RPI, remains undefeated in duals at 12-0 and boasts a 22-1 overall record this season. The win was Bolen's ninth over a ranked opponent this year.
- Smeltzer had the first pin of his career over Tyrie Houghton in just 18 seconds. The fall is the fastest of the season for any Hokie. Smeltzer improves to 13-12 this season, claiming bonus points in 11 of his 13 wins.
- In the last match of the night, No. 19 Mitch Moore secured a 7-3 upset victory over No. 10 Tariq Wilson. The win was payback for Moore's sudden victory defeat to Wilson at the 2019 Cliff Keen Invite. The sophomore improves to 10-2 in duals this season, outscoring opponents 45-7.
