Smeltzer named ACC Wrestler of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech wrestling's Stanley Smeltzer has been named ACC Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Smeltzer earns the honor after going 2-0 this past weekend with two major decision victories. He defeated Sam DePrez 11-3 in Tech's 47-0 win over Binghamton on Saturday, and he followed that with a 12-4 win over No. 19 Cornell's Jonathan Fagen on Sunday.

Smeltzer's second major decision of the weekend clinched the dual over No. 19 Cornell. The win is the Hokies' fifth over a ranked opponent this season. Tech, at 8-0, is one of three division one programs still undefeated.

With two more last weekend, Smeltzer leads the Hokies with seven major decision victories this season. He is an even 10-10 in matches.

Smeltzer is the third Hokie to be named ACC Wrestler of the Week this season. B.C. LaPrade earned the honor the first week of the season after he defeated No. 16 Jarrett Jacques of Missouri to help the Hokies win their season opener. Brent Moore was honored two weeks later after his pin of No. 12 Sammy Sasso was the difference in Tech pulling the upset of Ohio State.

Smeltzer and No. 3 Virginia Tech return to Cassell this Friday for their ACC opener against No. 12 North Carolina.
