Tech set to open 2020 at Central Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Virginia Tech wrestling will ring in the new year with their fourth top-25 dual of the season against No. 24 Central Michigan Friday night at 7 p.m. ET. The dual can be streamed on ESPN+.

Tech Travels to Central Michigan

  • Friday will be the fourth top-25 showdown of the season for the No. 5 Hokies. They are 3-0 in the previous matchups against No. 9 Missouri, No. 21 Northwestern and No. 3 Ohio State.
  • Four of the five Hokies ranked by InterMat are scheduled to compete Friday night. Mitch Moore is out for the Hokies and Josh Baier will make his dual debut as his replacement.
  • Friday could feature two matches between ranked wrestlers: No. 12 Joey Prata vs. No. 11 Drew Hildebrandt and No. 18 John Borst vs. No. 5 Matt Stencel.
  • The Hokies look to keep their 4-0 dual record perfect Friday night.

 
McFadden places second at Midlands Championships

  • Redshirt senior David McFadden came in second place at the Midlands Monday night after going 4-1 over the two-day tournament.
  • McFadden picked up a 6-5 decision victory over No. 3 Evan Wick of Wisconsin to reach the finals of the 165-pound division. McFadden lost a close 5-3 decision to No. 2 Alex Marinelli of Iowa in the championship.
  • McFadden improved his season record to 12-2, including 2-2 against ranked opponents. McFadden is now 2-1 against top-10 opponents this season.
  • With his four wins at the Midlands, McFadden upped his career total to 98, passing current Virginia Tech assistant Jared Haught on the Tech all-time wins list. McFadden is now tied with Scott Justus for 13th on the list.

 
Hokies handle Chattanooga to close out 2019

  • After winning nine of the 10 matches, Virginia Tech defeated Chattanooga 29-3 on Dec. 21.
  • The dual victory closed out 2019 for the Hokies in what was a historic year for the program.
  • Mekhi Lewis became Virginia Tech's first national champion at the 2019 NCAA Championships last March.
  • Over the course of the year, Virginia Tech went 11-3 in duals, including 6-3 against ranked opponents.
