Tech has setback against Wake Forest

BLACKSBURG – Returning to Cassell Coliseum at Carilion Clinic Court, the Virginia Tech volleyball team was defeated 3-0 by Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon. 

 

The Hokies (10-19, 3-13 ACC), seeking a season sweep over Wake Forest (13-15, 3-14), came up short against the Demon Deacons in its return to Cassell from a three-match road swing. 

 

Redshirt freshman Jennifer Williams led the team in kills with seven, while middle blocker Marisa Cerchio added six herself, bringing her team-leading season total to 293. Three Tech players reached double figures in digs, with junior Kaity Smith recording 12, junior Kylie Thomas added 10 and freshman Logan Mosley scooping up 12. 

 

Mosley is just four digs shy of claiming the all-time freshman dig record at Tech. Mosley sits at 478 on the season, and the record is 481. 

 

Wake was paced by junior Caroline Kuhn, who registered 12 kills and five digs and setter Madeline Holt who posted 36 assists. Freshman Peyton Suess tallied three aces in the match, tying her season-high. 

 

THE MATCH

 

Tech fell into a hole early in the first set, going down 11-5 following a kill from the Demon Deacons Olivia Saunders. Williams, for Tech, had four kills in the first set alone as the Hokies attempted to inch back. Wake would close the first with the final three points to win the frame 25-17.

 

The Hokies jumped out to a lead halfway through the second stanza going up 15-12 following a kill from Kaity Smith. Smith came alive in the second recording, three kills and five digs. Wake would close the second on a 7-2 run to win the set 25-23. 

 

Wake Forest, with the hopes of closing out the game, came out strong in the third, gaining a 17-10 lead over Tech. Jennifer Williams posted three kills in the third, but it was not enough as Wake claimed the set 25-13 and won the match. 

 

GAME NOTES

 

- Junior Kaity Smith scooped up 12 digs against the Demon Deacons recording her second straight double-digit dig performance and 10th on the season. 
 

- Jennifer Williams collected seven kills against Wake her second-highest kill total on the season. Williams now has 22 kills over three matches.
 

- Sophomore Sarah Jane Lynch had nine assists in just one set played on Sunday. Lynch has 57 assists over four matches.

The Hokies will stay at home to face in-state Virginia for Senior Day on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 4:30 p.m. ET at Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum. The match be a part of the Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529 and will be broadcast on ACC Network Rxtra.
