Maroon evens Hokies Fall World Series with Game 2 win

BLACKSBURG – For the second straight game, the Maroon team took a first-inning lead, but this time it would not relinquish its advantage as the squad posted a 9-3 victory in Game 2 of the Hokies' Fall World Series at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park Wednesday afternoon.

The visitors in the game, Maroon jumped out to a seven-run lead in the opening frame, with Spencer Palmer driving home three runs with both a double and triple in the inning. Reagan Teegarden, Brennan Reback, Brett Stallings and Matt Balance also picked up an RBI in the inning.

Orange responded in the home half of the second with a two-RBI triple off the bat of Gavin Cross and then scored on an error to cut his team's deficit to 7-3.

However, Carson Taylor secured Maroon's win with an RBI single in the third and a solo home run in the fifth to account for the rest of the contest's scoring.

Maroon's Reback led the team with three runs, while Taylor crossed the plate twice. Stallings, Palmer and Teegarden all had two hits for the victors, while Cross was the only Orange player with a multi-hit game.

On the mound, Xander Hamilton struck out three in three innings of work for Maroon, while Noah Johnson (2.0IP/2K) and Will Pickford (1.0) closed out the game. Highlighting the Orange outings were Samuel Rochard, who struck out four in 3.0 innings, and Peter Sakellaris, who had two strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
