WILMINGTON, N.C. – In the final match of the Battle by the Beach, 16th-ranked Virginia Tech got another first half goal from Emily Gray and another Mandy McGlynn shutout as the Hokies defeated the host UNCW Seahawks 1-0 Sunday afternoon at UNCW Soccer Stadium.
With the victory, Tech finished its non-conference slate with a perfect 8-0 record, which marks just the third time in program history the team has won its first eight to start the year (2012 and 2014). The loss dropped the Seahawks record to 4-3.
Two days after scoring the fastest goal for Tech in almost five years, Gray stood over a free kick from about 28 yards out. Her left-footed strike curved over the wall and into the goal to give the Hokies a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. It was her second goal of the weekend and the fourth of her career.
UNCW, with the wind at its back in the second half, managed five corner kicks and 10 shots after intermission, but Tech goalkeeper McGlynn and the Tech defense withstood the onslaught.
McGlynn made the goal stand, again (Tech won 1-0 on Friday night after Gray's goal in the fifth minute) as she made two saves, but also cleaned up a number of scoring opportunities for the Seahawks.
She picked up her 37th victory as a Hokie and improved her record to 37-0-2 when the team gives her a lead at any point in a match. The shutout was her sixth of the season and the 28th of her Tech career, one shy of tying the career school record (Dayle Colpitts, 2010-13).
The six overall shutouts are also now the second most ever in school history through the team's first eight matches, while the two goals allowed are tied for the fewest through the same time frame (2012, who had seven shutouts in first eight matches).
Tech won the Battle by the Beach, while four Hokies were named to the All-Tournament Team led by MVP Gray, who became the ninth Tech player to score back-to-back game winners since 2010. Jordan Hemmen, Grace Sklopan and McGlynn joined Gray on the team.
