NFL’s Preseason Week Three will be jam packed with Hokies

Virginia Tech opens its 2019 schedule on August 31 at Boston College. That date is also pivotal on NFL calendars as teams must cut down to 53 players. The following day, clubs are permitted to establish a Practice Squad of up to 10 players.

The preseason's third game often serves as a final dress rehearsal for projected starters, some of whom may play into the third quarter. For other players potentially on the bubble, it offers another chance to put their work on tape for other clubs or possibly secure a practice squad position.

Here's a look at upcoming preseason games featuring Virginia Tech alums:

Carolina at New England – Thursday, August 22 – 7:30 p.m. ET
K Joey Slye looks to continue his perfect preseason for Carolina when the Panthers face off against the Patriots. Last week, Slye made both of his field goal attempts, including a 54-yarder. Slye is now five-for-five on field goal tries this preseason and has recorded a touchback on seven of his 10 kickoffs.

Buffalo at Detroit – Friday, August 23 – 8:00 p.m. ET
LB Tremaine Edmunds, WR Cam Phillips, G Wyatt Teller, and the Bills will play the Lions and TE Logan Thomas. Phillips and Teller both saw action last week along with Edmunds who recorded two tackles in the Bills, 27-14, win over Carolina. Logan Thomas did not play versus Houston in preseason Week Two.
