GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech players Kerry Carpenter, Chris Gerard and Ryan Okuda were among the 61 ACC student-athletes named to the 2019 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team as announced today by the league office.
It's the third straight year Tech has had at least three players chosen to the squad and it marks the 14th straight postseason the Hokies have had at least two members.
Okuda, a rising junior from Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, makes the squad for the first time and highlights the trio named to the All-ACC Academic Baseball Team. Back in March, the mechanical engineering student won the 2019 Virginia Tech Skelton Award for Academic Excellence in Athletics at the Athletics Director Honors Celebration. Joining Okuda on the postseason academic team and also earning the honor for the first time, as well, were Gerard, a rising sophomore pitcher from Wayne, New Jersey, who is working towards a degree in business, and departed junior outfielder Carpenter, a finance major from Eustis, Florida. Carpenter was a 19th-round selection in the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft and is now playing in the Detroit Tigers organization.
The ACC's Scholar-Athlete of the Year was Clemson's Logan Davidson. The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. To view the entire team, CLICK HERE.
