Tech falls in final game against Boston College

BLACKSBURG – In the rubber match of its ACC series against Boston College, the Virginia Tech baseball team fell behind early, but continued to battle all night. However, the Hokies left the bases loaded in three frames and stranded a total of 15 in the contest as they dropped Game 3 to the Eagles Monday night, 5-2, at English Field at Union Park.

With the win, Boston College (26-25, 10-17 ACC) also secured the series win and put the Hokies in a hole when it comes to the ACC postseason as they now sit two games behind both the Eagles and Virginia and have just one series left against the Cavaliers that starts in 10 days.

The Eagles scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to jump out to an early lead. Joe Suozzi singled home his team's first run and his solo home run in the fourth put BC up 3-0. A Tech error in the sixth allowed a pair of runs to score that gave the visitor's a 5-1 lead.

Tech (25-24, 8-19 ACC), who loaded the bases in the fourth with two outs, did it for the second time in the seventh. However, BC reliever Matt Gill got a grounder to shortstop Brian Dempsey to end the threat.

In the eighth, the Hokies mounted another two-out rally and again loaded the bases. This time, Nick Biddison singled home Mike Fernandez to make it 5-2, but another grounder to Dempsey got the Eagles out of that jam.

In the ninth, Tanner Thomas was hit by a pitch with one out and Nick Owens singled for the second time in the game, bringing the tying run to the plate in Dalton Harum, who also had two hits on the night.

BC again went to its bullpen and John Witkowski picked up his third save by getting a grounder off of Harum and a strikeout to end the game. Thomas Lane improved to 4-1 with the win out of the bullpen. Nic Enright fell to 1-3 with the loss.
