Tech home Tuesday, then on the road for next five

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech baseball team is currently in the midst of a 10-game stretch where nine of those will be played on the road. The Hokies' lone home contest is Tuesday at English Field at Union Park against Marshall, with a scheduled 6 p.m. first pitch. Tech will then go back on the road for five straight, facing ETSU tomorrow at 6 p.m., heading to Durham, N.C. for a three-game ACC series at Duke over the weekend, and concluding the span at High Point next Tuesday.

Tech enters the midweek games with an 18-14 overall record and is 5-10 in the ACC. The Hokies went 2-2 in the first four games of this 10-game stretch. It started with the team's 13th non-conference victory of the season at VMI last Tuesday and ended with a 10-9 nail-biter to salvage one win at Wake Forest on Sunday.

Quick notes on the Marshall contest

  • This will be the second meeting of the season between the two programs, as the squads met up earlier this season (March 20) in Charlestown, W.Va.
  • The Hokies trailed 2-0 after two, but closed the game scoring 11 of the game's final 12 runs in the 11-3 win. With the bases loaded and leading by three in the sixth, Tech's Nick Biddison hit a bases-clearing double that put the Hokies up 9-3 and the team cruised from there.
  • Marshall enters the game with an 18-13 mark, including a 6-6 mark in Conference USA play. However, they were swept over the weekend at Southern Miss, losing two one-run games in a Saturday doubleheader.
  • In the all-time series, Tech holds a 27-9 overall mark against the Herd and that includes a 4-1 record since the teams renewed the rivalry in 2017. Tech is 3-0 under head coach John Szefc.
  • Before the series renewed in 2017, the teams had not played a game since April 18, 2006, a 9-4 Hokies win in Blacksburg.
  • Tech won both games last year against Marshall on back-to-back days in April, 11-3 in Blacksburg (April 10) and 11-9 in Charleston (April 11).
  • At home against the Herd, Tech is 19-4 overall, 7-2 in games at English Field at Union Park and has won three in a row.

Quick notes on the ETSU contest

  • This will also be the second meeting of the season between the two programs, as the squads met up earlier this season (February 19) in Blacksburg - the Hokies' home opener.
  • Tech jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first inning, as the first seven batters combined for four walks, two singles and a hit-by-pitch. Every Tech starter had either a run scored or an RBI in the game in the 9-3 victory.
  • ETSU enters the game with a 23-8 overall record and is 4-2 in Southern Conference action. However, the Buccaneers are coming off a weekend series loss at VMI, winning just the Saturday game (14-3), while being shut out in the rubber match on Sunday, 6-0.
  • All-time against the Bucs, Tech owns a 37-18 mark and is 23-7 at home, while holding a 12-9 mark on the road.
  • ETSU won the previous meeting in Johnson City, Tenn., 7-4 on April 18, 2017. The only current Hokie to play in that game was Jack Owens, who went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base.
  • The Hokies had won the previous six meetings against the Buccaneers before the 2017 loss, including three straight on the road.
