HOKIES HOST ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • Winners of the last two ACC championships, No. 13 Virginia Tech will now play host to the conference tournament as the Hokies welcome their league counterparts to Cassell Coliseum for the 2019 ACC Championships on Saturday, March 9.
  • Tickets for the event are $10 dollars, admission is free for youth 18 and under and ACC students will be admitted for free with a valid student ID.
  • ACC Network Extra again plans nearly 10 hours of live coverage from 11 a.m. through 9 p.m. Matches will be delivered on two concurrent live streams. Shawn Kenney and Tim Foley will handle the call on Mat 1, with Dean Linke and Rock Harrison manning Mat 2.
  • Live stats can be found on TrackWrestling.com
  • Virginia Tech previously hosted the ACC Championships in 2009 and 2014.
  • Tech won the 2014 ACC Championships, their second-consecutive title, in Cassell Coliseum with 87.0 team points and four champions.
  • A three-peat for the Hokies would be the longest streak of ACC titles in the conference since North Carolina won four-straight championships from 1997-00.

ACC SEEDS ARE OUT

  • The ACC announced the seeds for the conference championships on Tuesday and it had three Tech grapplers slotted as No. 1 seeds, the most of any ACC school.
  • Mekhi Lewis (165), David McFadden (174) and Zack Zavatsky (184) are all the top seeds at their weight after finishing the regular season without a blemish on their ACC records.
  • The Hokies also have two No. 2 seeds in Mitch Moore (141) and Tom Sleigh (197).
  • Overall, the Hokies do not have a wrestler seeded below the four-line at each weight.

ACC GETS TOUGHER

  • The ACC received a league-record 37 qualifier allocations for this year's NCAA Championships that will be decided on the mats at the 2019 ACC Championships held in Cassell Coliseum.
  • 37 bids for the six schools in the ACC ranks as the most bids per school of any conference in Division I, behind only the Big Ten.
  • Zack Zavatsky is on pace to become only the 14th four-time NCAA qualifier in program history.
  • Billy Miller and Tom Sleigh qualified for NCAAs three times at Edinboro and Bucknell, respectively.

TECH'S HISTORY AT ACCs

  • The Hokies have won the ACC Championships four times since joining the conference in 2004-05.
  • Tech's four ACC championships have over the last six years.
  • Since winning its first ACC title in 2013, the Hokies have finished lower than second only once (third, 2015).
  • Head coach Tony Robie has led Tech to two of its four ACC titles; his first came as interim head coach in 2017 and the second came last season in 2018.
  • Last year, the Hokies had four ACC champions and the ACC Championship's Most Valuable Wrestler in Brent Moore, who defeated top-seeded Kevin Jack of NC State in sudden victory overtime in the finals.
  • Zavatsky looks to join Joey Dance, Nick Brascetta, Jesse Dong, Jarrod Garnett and Devin Carter as the only wrestlers in program history to win three or more ACC titles.
