PITTSBURGH – Redshirt junior David McFadden wrapped up his third All-American campaign with a 4-3 decision over Nebraska's Mikey Labriola in the fifth-place match at the NCAA Championships in PPG Paints Arena on Saturday morning.
Redshirt senior Zack Zavatsky dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Oklahoma State's Dakota Geer in his final match, wrapping a stellar career that saw him place twice at nationals and win three ACC titles.
Tonight, redshirt freshman Mekhi Lewis will wrestle for the national title at 165 pounds against Penn State's Vincenzo Joseph at 7 p.m. on ESPN. Virginia Tech sits in 10th in the team standings with 46.0 team points.
SESSION V NOTES
- Trailing 3-2 with 13 seconds left in the third period, McFadden was on bottom but used a Granby roll to reverse Labriola and take a 4-3 lead.
- McFadden hasn't placed lower than sixth in his three-year career with the Hokies after placing sixth at 165 pounds as a true freshman in 2016, fifth in 2018 and fifth again at his new weight at 174.
- McFadden joins Devin Carter, Nick Brascetta and Solomon Chishko as the only Hokies to All-American at two different weight classes.
- McFadden now has a .681 career winning percentage at the NCAA Championships, a clip that is tied with Brascetta for third at Virginia Tech.
- The Hokies are seeking their seventh-consecutive top 10 finish at the national tournament.
