GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Lane Stone set the Virginia Tech 200 free record twice on Friday to lead Virginia Tech on the third day of the 2019 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina.
"It was another great day for the Hokies," said assistant coach Josh Huger. "The energy on the pool deck was outstanding and our fans in the stands were the loudest in the natatorium. On the day we broke three school records, recorded another relay NCAA A-standard and had 10 men competing in finals. We're in the driver's seat going into the final day of competition."
Stone broke the record of 1:34.26 set by Jan Switkowski in 2014 with a time of 1:34.01 during Friday's prelims. He followed up in the evening session with another record time, swimming 1:33.82 to finish fourth in the 200 free to hit an NCAA B cut time.
The Hokies set another record on Friday while swimming a time trial in the 200 free relay. The quartet of Jake Lamparella, Thomas Hallock, Henry Claesson and Ian Ho turned in a time of 1:17.41 to break the record set last season (David Herbert, Ho, Harrison Pierce and Hallock). In addition, the time was an NCAA automatic bid mark.
Tech claimed additional points in the 200 free with Norbert Szabo finishing 14th with a B cut time of 1:35.34 while Antani Ivanov claimed 16th in 1:37.03.
The 400 IM was also a strong event for the Hokies with two Tech top-five times set. Sam Tornqvist reached the A finals for the Hokies, finishing seventh with an NCAA B cut of 3:51.11. The time moves him to third on the Hokies' list.
Freshman Keith Myburgh had a huge B final in the 400 IM, finishing with a 3:45.40 to record the second fastest time in program history, placing 10th overall in the event. The Hokies also got points in the event from Filippo Dal Maso in 18th (3:47.46) and Michael Craddock who finished 22nd (3:50.07).
In addition, Lamparella scored for the Hokies in the 100 backstroke as he placed 16th with a B time of 47.42. His morning prelim time of 47.22 moved him into fifth on the Tech top-five list.
