Men’s Golf finishes seventh at Schenkel Invitational

Day Three - Final Round

The Virginia Tech men's golf team shot a 2-under 286 on Sunday and moved up to finish in seventh place at the Schenkel Invitational. The three-day tournament was played at the par 72, 6,947-yard Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Georgia.
 
Tech finished with a three-day total of 879 after improving from Friday's 304 to a 289 on Saturday and the 286 in Sunday's final round. The 289 was the fourth-best team score of the final round and improved Tech from 14th place after the first round to ninth place after the second round to the seventh place finish on Sunday.
 
Connor Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, led the Hokies. He finished with a 2-under 213 and tied for seventh place, 11 strokes behind medalist Stephen Fisk of host Georgia Southern. Burgess had four birdies in his final round 1-under 71.
 
Bradley de Beer, a sophomore from Western Cape, South Africa, tied for 24th place at 219 and Connor Johnson Jr., a freshman from Richmond, Virginia, tied for 43rd at 223. Tom Crow, a junior from Virginia Beach, Virginia, tied for 47th at 224 and Drew Brockwell, a freshman from Chesterfield, Virginia, finished in 77th place at 233. De Beer and Johnson joined Burgess with 1-under 71s to lead the Tech charge on Sunday.
 
Host Georgia Southern took the team title with a score of 26-under838, 13 strokes ahead of East Tennessee State and 23 strokes ahead of Notre Dame. Mississippi State was fourth at 862, Kentucky was fifth at 865 and the College of Charleston was sixth at 868, 11 strokes ahead of the Hokies. Middle Tennessee State was eighth at 883, Minnesota was ninth at 886, Georgia State was 10th at 889 and UAB was 11th at 890. Army finished 12th at 891, Maryland was 13th at 903 and Lipscomb was 14th at 908.
 
The Hokies will be back on the road this weekend, as they travel to Greenville, South Carolina to compete in the Furman Intercollegiate. The three-day tournament, hosted by Furman, will be played March 22-24 at the Furman University Golf Course.

Day Two - Second Round

The Virginia Tech men's golf team shot a 1-over 289 on Saturday and moves up to ninth place at the Schenkel Invitational. The three-day tournament is being played at the par 72, 6,947-yard Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Georgia.
 
Tech has a two-day total of 593 after improving from Friday's 304 to the 289 on Saturday. The 289 was the fifth-best team score of the second round and improved Tech from 14thplace after the first round to ninth place entering the final round on Sunday.
 
Connor Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, leads the Hokies. He fired a 4-under 68 on Saturday and is currently tied for eighth at 2-under 142. He is five strokes behind leader Stephen Fisk of host Georgia Southern. Burgess had five birdies and just a single bogey in Saturday's second round, moving him from a tie for 33rdplace to a tie for eighth place.
 
Bradley de Beer, a sophomore from Western Cape, South Africa, is tied for 35thplace at 148 and Tom Crow, a junior from Virginia Beach, Virginia, is tied for 52ndat 151. Connor Johnson Jr., a freshman from Richmond, Virginia, is tied for 59that 152 and Drew Brockwell, a freshman from Chesterfield, Virginia, is 79that 158. De Beer shot a 1-under 71 on Saturday.
 
East Tennessee State holds the lead entering the final round with an 11-under 565, three strokes ahead of Mississippi State and five strokes ahead host Georgia Southern. Notre Dame and the College of Charleston are tied for fourth at 575, Kentucky is sixth at 580, UAB is seventh at 590 and Middle Tennessee State is eighth at 592, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Minnesota is 10that 594, Army is 11that 596, Maryland and Georgia State are tied for 12that 601 and Lipscomb is 14that 604.
 
Virginia Tech will be grouped with MTSU and UAB in the final round on Sunday. The group will tee off from the first tee beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Connor Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, leads the Hokies at 2-over 74. He is eight strokes behind leader Peng Pichaikool of Mississippi State. Burgess recorded three birdies on the round.
 
Tom Crow, a junior from Virginia Beach, Virginia, is tied for 55that 76. Connor Johnson Jr., a freshman from Richmond, Virginia and Bradley de Beer, a freshman from Western Cape, South Africa are tied for 66that 77. Drew Brockwell, a freshman from Chesterfield, Virginia, is tied for 76that 78.
 
The College of Charleston and Mississippi State are tied for the lead at 5-under 283, two strokes ahead of East Tennessee State and five strokes ahead of Notre Dame. Kentucky is fifth at 289, host Georgia Southern is sixth at 290 and UAB and Middle Tennessee State are tied for seventh at 292. Minnesota and Lipscomb are tied for ninth at 295, Army is 11that 296, Georgia State is 12that 299 and Maryland is 13that 301, three strokes ahead of the Hokies.
 
Virginia Tech will be grouped with Maryland and a group of individuals in the second round on Saturday. The group will tee off from the 10thtee beginning at 9:45 a.m.
