Lacrosse program preps for clash with Radford Sunday afternoon

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team returns home to the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility on Sunday March 3 for a 3 p.m. contest against New River Valley foe Radford. The Hokies will wear pink jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness and fans are encouraged to do the same.
 
The Hokies are coming off a record breaking 20-goal win against Old Dominion on Wednesday, the largest margin of victory in program history. Eleven Hokies found the back of the net with Paige Petty and Emma Crooks scoring five goals apiece. Mary Claire Byrne played a complete game in midfield, scoring four points, collected five ground balls and causing three turnovers. On the draw circle, Elena Ricci corralled five, a team high.  
 
Petty, a 2019 Tewaaraton Award Watch List memberleads the team with 21 goals and owns a shooting percentage of .447. Crooks (14), Julia Bolte (14), Byrne (13), Sarah Lubnow (13) and Taylor Caskey (10) are all into double figures scoring as well in 2019. 
 
Goalie Morgan Berman had five saves against the Monarchs, bringing her season total to 47 saves, the most in the ACC.
 
The Highlanders 
Radford University is 1-1 only playing two games so far this season. The Highlanders defeated St. Francis 18-13 in their season opener at home, then fell to George Washington 14-9 on the road. 
 
Adrian Rius leads the Highlanders with seven goals and a shooting percentage of .583. Rius is followed by Lindsey Carrol who has six goals.
 
In goal, Hannah Rosen and Maddie Bowman have picked up seven saves each. 
 
The Series
The matchup on Sunday will be the third ever meeting between the two programs, with Radford playing their first season of varsity lacrosse in 2016. Tech leads 2-0, with their last meeting being at home in 2017. 
 
In last season's meeting, the Hokies defeated the Highlanders 20-2 behind four players who scored hat tricks, including Emma Harden. Caskey dished out three assists and Mary Clare McCarthy led the Hokies with four draw controls in the contest. 
 
Tech outshot Radford 34-9 and forced 17 Highlander turnovers.
