CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Despite winning more bonus point matches, No. 11 Virginia Techg couldn't get pas 15th-ranked North Carolina as the Tar Heels knocked off the Hokies, 18-14, Friday night in Carmichael Arena.
The Hokies (8-3, 2-1 ACC) dropped six of the 10 bouts and trailed 15-14 going into heavyweight. They'll return to action this Friday against No. 9 Cornell in Cassell Coliseum before taking on No. 23 Virginia at the Moss Art Center on Saturday at 7 p.m.
MATCH NOTES
- The loss snaps the Hokies eight-match winning streak, which was the fifth-longest active streak in the nation entering Friday.
- Joey Prata won his fourth-straight match at 125 point with a 2-0 decision on an escape and riding time.
- After Prata's win, the Heels rattled off four straight victories, including two sudden victory overtime and three by two points or less.
- Korbin Myers led 7-3 with under two minutes to go in the bout on three takedowns and an escape but Gary Wayne Harding used four near fall with the clock expiring to ice a come-from-behind 12-8 decision.
- Ryan Blees was tied 1-1 with eight seconds to go in the third against fourth-ranked Austin O'Connor but a hands to the face call was issued to Blees that served as the match-deciding point.
- Zack Zavatsky's 12-4 major decision over No. 14 Chip Ness was the 26th major of his career.
- Zavatsky now has 59 career dual meet victories, the sixth-most in program history.
- Following his major decision at 165 pounds, Mekhi Lewis has now won by bonus points in nine of 18 wins this season.
