COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Samantha Gillas won her opening round match to record her first collegiate win on the first day of the Bedford Cup Mid-Atlantic in College Park, Md.
Gillas defeated Towson's Lucy Gloninger with straight set scores of 6-3, 6-1. In the second round, Gillas fell to Eena DeSantis of Georgetown, 6-3, 6-2.
Fellow freshman Jade Woo had a bye in the opening round before facing Georgetown's Sydney Goodson in the second. In the first set the two battled going into a tiebreak where Goodson held on to win it 7-6(8). Goodson secured the match in the second, 6-3.
Sophomore Dori Mesmer had a first round bye, but faltered against Maryland's Zoe Kulkarni 6-0, 6-2 in the second round.
The Hokies doubles matches were postponed with play resuming Saturday morning. Tech will be back on the court tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. at the JTCC.
