BLACKSBURG - Three members of the Virginia Tech Women's Tennis Team will travel to compete in the Bedford Mid-Atlantic Cup this weekend. The four-day event will be hosted by the University of Maryland at the Junior Tennis Championship Center beginning Friday, Sept. 14 in College Park, Maryland. The event will culminate with championship matches on Monday, Sept. 17.
Sophomore Dori Mesmer will be competing in the Bedford Cup for her second consecutive year, and will be joined by newcomers Samantha Gillas and Jade Woo.
Woo, spent her high school career training at JTCC and was Virginia's number four recruit for the Class of 2018 heading into the season. Gillas, a four-star recruit from Texas, is also making her debut as a Hokie this weekend.
Mesmer and Woo both earned byes in the first round, but Mesmer is slated to face Maryland's Zoe Kulkarni in her opening match. Woo will square off against Sydney Goodson of Georgetown. Gillas will open her collegiate career versus Towson's Lucy Gloninger.
In doubles, Mesmer and Woo will pair up against Maryland's duo of Kate Yemelyanenka and Saya Usui.
The Hokies will face student-athletes from universities such as George Washington, Maryland, VCU, Georgetown, Coppin State and Towson.
Competition begins with singles matches at 9 a.m. on Friday morning to be followed by doubles.
