CARY, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women's tennis team made an impressive run to the quarterfinals of the 2018 ACC Women's Tennis Championship, but the Hokies came up short to No. 15 Miami, falling 5-1 on Friday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park.
Tech's No. 2 doubles team of freshmen Nika Kozar and Nina Sorkin rolled past the Miami duo of Dominika Paterova and Ulyana Shirokova 6-1. The 'Canes took the match at one, leaving the deciding point on court three.
The Hokies' Sarah Baron and Katherine Butler kept it close early in the match, but Miami's Sinead Lohan and Ana Madcur began to pull away as the 'Canes clinched doubles point with a 6-3 win.
Heading into singles, Tech tied it up at 1 as Kozar dispatched Madcur in straight sets on court four, 6-1, 6-0.
Miami reclaimed the advantage and went up 3-1 off wins at the one and two. Tech was battling on court three where Elena Cerezo-Codina went to a third set against Daniella Roldan. After winning the opening set 6-4, Cerezo-Codina fell to Roldan 6-2, 6-2 as the 'Canes clinched point needed to win.
The match at five closed out a few seconds later where Butler and Shirokova went to three before the Miami player held on to win it 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Tech wraps up the 2018 spring campaign with a 14-12 overall record. The NCAA Selection Show is May 1 at 5 p.m.
