BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women's tennis team battled past No. 50 Boston College, clinching a 4-3 decision over the Eagles on Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
With the match tied at 3-3, Tech's (12-5, 3-5 ACC) Natalie Novotna, ranked 66th, held on to win the match on court one in straight sets. The Tech sophomore won the opening set 6-4 over No. 83 Asiya Dair, but the two kept it close in the second and were tied at 6-6 to force the tiebreak. Novotna and Dair traded points in the breaker, but Novotna held on to win it 7-5, securing the Hokies's win.
Tech fell behind Boston College (10-7, 2-6 ACC) after giving up the doubles point. Katherine Butler and Novotna paired up at two and had the 6-4 win, but the Eagles claimed the other two matches.
The Hokies got on the board behind Caroline Daxhelet's win on court two where she rolled past Kylie Wilcox, 6-0, 6-3. Tech took the lead with a win from Nika Kozar at three, defeating Natasha Irani 6-3, 6-3.
Nina Sorkin gave the Hokies a 3-1 advantage as she downed Elene Tsokilauri 6-1, 7-5 on court five. The Eagles won the next two singles match to force the decision down to Novotna on one.
Tech will return to the court tomorrow, hosting No. 46 NC State at 2 p.m. Prior to the game will be an Easter Egg hunt at 1:30 for the children.
